Show I WEEKLY REFLEX 9 DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER. JUNE 3, 1981 Intow Did Layton U? Clearfield Bummer Activities Cerown Win Clearfield's Recreation Director, Roger Thomas, prefers to call the 1981 summer recreation schedule a summer sensation. The schedule is heavier than ever before which includes plenty of classes and events to please the entire family. the real reason they stayed consistent enough to win a league crown was the good moves he made personnel-wise, said Hicks. Hicks was impressed with Brian Murrays hustle at shortstop, Pearces strength at third, the rotation on the pitching mound, the move of Lance Bright-sho- e to first and positioning of Kenny Heath behind the plate. By KEITH DUNCAN Brad Hawkins pleasant surprise through the spring of 81 was the pleasant surprise to a lot of folks, except perhaps for those who opposed the Layton Lancers on the baseball diamond. I DIDNT really know if we had the horses to do it, recalled Hawkins after taking a moment to look back on the season. And then to win a championship, it was a surprise. And as the story went, no one really expected Layton to do much during this springs high school play. I was hopeful that we could at least finish third for a state berth, said the first year varsity coach. REGISTRATION is the right places, Hicks said. Maybe it was Hawkins vision that positioned his team for a region championship, but the kids will never stop telling their stories how the coach got them to believe in themselves. m I DONT really believe in yelling at a kid face to face in front of everyone else. I had a coach in the Florida State League that did it that way and I know how much I hated it. A kid has got to be given a chance and the more pressure you can take off him, the better. Even though at times youve got to produce under pressure, said Hawkins. HAWKINS ADMITS there was no real game plan on position strategy when the season first began. But that was the situation most teams around the league found themselves in, except perhaps for Bonneville, who were loaded and a heavy favorite to win the league. Coach Ken Hicks, the veteran mentor at Clearfield, saw his team go down in defeat twice to the Layton squad. Hicks observed Hawkins success at a different angle. 2, a.m. at South days 8:30-9:3-0 Clearfield Elementary, starts June 8 and ends July 27. Fee $7. Rent A Camp ONE OF my outfielders, Alan Gentry, once dropped a fly ball and he really got down on himself. I told him that I knew guys that were making $200,000 a year that dropped fly balls, so I told him to relax, continued Hawkins. Hawkins claims he didnt elect team captains his first year, mainly because he wanted to lead the team. But I cant give Murray and Gentry enough credit for their leadership, particularly Murray, who was a senior and who was the only ballplayer in the beginning that I had the most confidence in, mainly because he had started the year before, Hawkins said. I THOUGHT at first it might hurt Brightshoe if I moved him to first, but apparently it took the press-- . ure off him knowing he wouldnt have to catch. He really came through to hit the ball for us. People at the first of the year were telling me that Pearce couldnt play anywhere. But he came through as one of our most consistent people. ONE OF my best feelings about the season is the emergence of Heath behind the plate, said Hawkins. The gutty effort of this sophomore impressed a lot of folks. His .400-plhitting average, his 13 throwouts to third and first and the key homers and RBIs earned him first team Prior to comand had caught Heath a was to ing Layton, pitcher only two games last summer. Hawkins says his pitching staff struggled like he knew they would, but he believes he got the most out of Mark Woodward ), Joey Castillo, and David Draper. ar pre- sently being taken for the summer classes at the Clearfield Recreation office located in the Clearfield Swim Pool, 934 S. 1000 E., Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Registration for sessions I and II will continue to take place until June 6 while more registration time is being alloted session II from June 23 to July 3. The following are classes for youth: I REALLY dont think there was a big question about his kids abilities, it was just putting them in WHAT WAS the difference? How could a group with the little experience these kids had, win eight league games and tie powerful Bonneville for the region crown? Everyone Ive talked to, likes to point their finger at Hawkins, both opposing coaches and his own players. They describe him as a baseball man. HAWKINS, A former BYU baseball star, often told me through the season that his strong belief was that youve got to love the game and youve got to show it. While playing for Glen Tuckett for BYU, we were always told that if we saw the coach walking around on the field, then we could too. But Coach Tuckett always ran wherever he was going and we ran too, said the Layton coach. IF ANY of you witnessed some Layton games this spring, seeing Hawkins sprint for third or first base was one of the first things noticed about the first-yehead coach. Too many kids make baseball a job. I try to make a three-hohitting practice fun, youve got to, thats just the way baseball should be played, Hawkins said. JEFF PEARCE, now a graduated senior, tied down third base duties all year for the Lancers. The difference in us as a team was the enthusiasm that Coach Hawkins brought with him. said Pearce. The third baseman also spoke highly of Hawkins I probably learned and his baseball knowledge. more about baseball in the three or four months playing for Hawkins than I had learned in my entire life, said Pearce.
