Show v I WEEKLY REFLEX it DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MAY 13, 1982 akons Relish .Third Title Like Other Two IF The Clearfield boys claimed their third straight Region One track and field championship with a close fmish over the Bonneville Lakers. Keith Flint still maintains that the key to defending the championship was his teams depth. "When you count up first places, we were probably down the list a little ways. But the reason we won the title is that we scored some points in each and every event. Another key is getting the kids excited about track early. The indoor circuit helps to do that. Overall we just try to provide some extra excitement about the sport and try to keep it going. Duncan Bulletin Sports CLEARFIELD - How sweet it was for John Flint and the Clearfield crew as they combined last Thursday and Friday for the schools third consecutive Region One track and field title. It was a combination made of weathered seniors and exhuberant juniors and sophomores that carried the championship away from a threatening Bonneville crew. It was the Lakers that gave the Falcons their toughest battle during the three years the Falcons have reigned. One of the featured events of any track meet and at Clearfield last has to be the it different. wasnt week, any Brian Wright surprised the field, but not himself, by taking the title in record breaking time. His time of 10.72 set a new region record and goes in the books as one of the fastest times in state this year. There isnt a bigger heart in the world, said He deserves what Flint of his speedy sprinter. he got as much as anyone in the state. Of course, we had sort of an intuition that he might have a great meet. I was sitting next to Brians dad when he won the race and afterwards I turned to him as a quiet breeze brushed up and I said to him, The time is(w)right. rs It was accomplished on a couple of sunny and bright afternoons which saw ten Region One boys records ousted to make room for the new ones. I tell ya, we never get tired of winning around here, said Flint with a hoarse voice. "We had some kids who arent blue chippers come through like they were blue chippers. You have to feel real good about it. We had our five or six veteran seniors come through and a lot of young talent to back them up. Were very excited about it, even though this one (title) was a little harder to get. Flint was enthused with a lot of things after the meet but appeared exceptionally happy about the way his seniors came through. He was elated to see each of them bow out riding a crest of the region championship.' mmnx - W-- ' UO-hig- i jt - 100-met- er errrfsthtfol " 'TracyFitkitvr besides"$etting hurdles and taking record in the the title, was also sixth in the 200 meters. But he soon realized it was more mental than physical. I kept stretching and stretching until I got myself into a hot sweat, which is something I couldnt quite do before, said Brian. Getting a good start was the key for Brian. Fifty yards into the race he knew he could get it because of the position he held. He was referring to Brian Wright in the Mike Fahnert in the h hurdles, Tracy Pitkin in the hurdles, Karl Wilson and Jimmy Phillips in the relays, John Tisler in the jumping events and Rob Browning and Alan Holyoak in the discus and shot put events. Im really proud of those guys and will be for along time, Flint relished. In the relays, Clearfield spread it out and never went for a first place, like maybe they might have wanted to. However each of the relay teams did take second, which helped in their crown quest. The Falcons look forward to the state jneet, next. . The Clearfield coach .admitted that Region One would hold their own but he was still inclined to give Hillcrest the nod. The Huskies were the team that edged out Clearfield for the state jewels last spring. Flint also looked to Viewmont and East of Region Four to be strong in state. "It will certainly take a better performance than what we had today to. win a state title, said Flint. But wed like to think that the feat of winning the region title will give us some momentum going into the state gathering. , r 2146 N.
