Show SECTION DECEMBER. 22 1982 Lancers Sitting In Front Seat By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports LAYTON The primary reason why Layton's Doug Moon and Mike Hansen are in the front seat to win region championships this winter, is simple. They're simply thinking of bottom-lin- e answers of how and why it should happen. Thy don't like beating around the bush. MOONS BASKETBALL club took to some serious practice over the past few day and a glimpse of his club through one of those session appeas to have done the team some genuine good. Hansen has had some sharp wrestling teams over recent years, and the '82-8- 3 bunch look mighty impressive themselves. He's the kind of guy who hates to lose and fourth place finishes in Viewmon! Wrestling Tournaments are not good enough so why not take firsts. Basketball As practice ended for Layton's hoopsters last Monday, a practice many of the players and the coaches felt was one of their best yet, it was Brett Campbell who was one who felt extremely positive. "W E SETTLED dow n to many of the things that we had to work on. Region is almost here and that aint no fun and games. We're playing more as a team, I'm really excited about things," Campbell said with a big smile on his face. M(X)N WAS also concerned and admitted about the same tbmgs. Wc needed the lay olT from games. It's given us some time lo relax and play heller together. This is a game that takes an awful amount of time to gel good at. You've got to learn how to play with other guys, have to learn what your limitations are and w hat you can and cannot do. We're not anywhere where wc want to be but weve got a lot doner because of the week off. Tonight was a good example, I thought our practice w as much better than any other." IT'S STARTING to look like a basketball team. Without a lot of mistakes, we'll be right in there, said Moon. As far as the league goes, Moon said he couldnt remember another year where all the teams were so evenly matched. He has good reason to feel that way with every team in Region One sporting a winning record in "THERE ARE some goud teams in this league. The key I fed will he to win at home, bccauc with one. may! e No losses at home, a team is going to find son r real trouble making it along the way. Rodney Ricnt jes was one of four Lancers w ho made it lo the finals, but he was the only one to come away with an individual championship. Ricntjes wrestled very well. "That's getting after it," said Hansen. The three Lancers who settled for second were Eric Hyde at 1 12. Mike Fetroff at I I9and Rich Gallegoes at 132. LAYTONS two other placers in the tourney were Tracy Jones who look thud and Blame Tracy who took fifth. "In order for us to be a strong Male contender, we've got to place more Kid'.. said Hansen. "I Mill feci that kids like IXmnv 7amoia (98). Brian Bailey. Brent Higgs. Russ Murdock. and Mark Wilcon should and ought lo place for us." Giants Need Time By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports CLEARFIELD -- - Sleeping giants like Christmas breaks just like everyone else does, but you wont find ones at Clearfield High getting too lazy through the winter vacation. IN MANY respects, Coach Craig Hansens 'basketball unit and Scott Tennis wrestling outfit, might be considered sleeping giants this season. Neither of the teams has been favorite to win their respecpicked a clear-cu- t tive region championships, especially in wrestling where Tennis is working with a wealth of youth and inexperience. But people in Region One parts have been lessoned never to take the Falcons lightly in basketball or wrestling. Just when you think youve got em hogtied, they'll bust loose and do you a good one. Basketball The mens basketball squad entered last weeks action with a 1 mark and escaped with a solid win over American Fork, but fell to two very good prep basketball teams in Bingham and Bountiful. 4-- Falcon Steve Flink hooks and drives for two points in Clearfields 5 win over American Fork. 61-5- THIS WEEK Hansen will guide his squad against the West High Panthers for a crack at sixth victory. That contest the took place Wednesday of this week. One of the featured contests of the prebattle. season was the Clearfield-Bountiful The Braves are the defending state champions and after Clearfield came away from Bountiful last Wednesday, Hansen was saying the Braves looked better than last years team. BUT HANSEN also felt that his squad played the much taller Braves fairly even. "We certainly didnt play like we could have. We shot 37 percent from the field while they came in with a avmasei "But on the rebound chart, we played them fairly evenly. We had the same number of offensive rebounds but they beat us by a couple on the defensive side, which is going to happen when you miss as many shots as we did, said Hansen. nt CLEARFIELD found themselves down 7 at the end of three quarters but forged courageously back. A tough full court press saw Clearfield get back within six points with a 1:40 to play. With a couple of losses behind them, Clearfield came back last Friday to down a very good American Fork team. The Falcons bounced out ahead 19-- 9 at the end of one period but may have played their worst game of the from then on. The Cavemen knotted the score at 7 going into the final quarter and if it hadnt been for the fact Clearfield hit 16 of 16 of their last freethrows, they may have made a losing hattrick of last week. 53-3- pre-seas- 37-3- MATT JENSEN, who barely made sophomore team two years ago, has played extremeHe is Clearfield's ly well in the n. leading rebounder after eight games and clearly a strong figure in their attack. His aggressiveness, especially on the offensive boards, has been a big surprise for Hansen and other coaches. "I'm very pleased with Matt." said Hansen. He barely made the team this year but has done an outstanding job." AGAINST American Fork , Clearfield saw Mike Anderson, Mike Wallace and Steve Flink get in double figures. Mark Wilson. Clearfield's outstanding little guard, had only four points, but as his coach commented, Mark isn't the kind to force things when they aren't natural." Wrestling Coach Tennis, who has become as much as part of the wrestling tradition as anyone at Clearfield, was just happy that his team got invited to last weekend's Viewmont Wrestling Tournament, perhaps the toughest tournament the Falcons will see until state. "WE NEED all the experience we can get," said Tennis, and why not get it from the best. The Falcons are loaded with youth and inexperience and ended up finishing thirteenth in a field of sixteen teams. Clearfields brightest hope in the Viewmont tourney was Tom Wood at 145 pounds. Wood missed all of his sophomore year due to an injury but has come back this season with fire in his eyes. Tom pinned his semi-finoppo al nent in overtime and entered the finals against an extremely talented Union wrestler. Tom was pinned in the Saturday night championship round, but he admits that getting as far as he did. brought plenty of confidence. "TOM HAS limited experience and a lot of natural ability, said Tennis, "but as he gains more experience against tough kids he should - develop into a real ti&er for us."- Shad Ragan placed sixth at 112 in a weight that features some of the toughest w rcsilers in the state. WAYNE Estep, had his hands full at the tourney. He was beaten by the from Alta, a guy that Wayne has already beaten this year. In the consolation Wayne fell to Brighton's talented Mike Sorensen was one match away from placing in the tournament and Tennis is happy with his improvement, being only a junior. RICO TRUJILLO was beating Roger Reynard of Davis, in fact was ahead by two points with only 15 seconds left. "Instead of being conservative and cautious he goes for a firemans carry and forces the takedow n and gets taken down himself. But Rico and others are learning. Weve got some kids who are dedicated to the sport and want to win," said Tennis. "I dont feel too bad about w hat happened at Viewmont, said Tennis. We need a good tough schedule to keep us in line and keep us improving. Davis Eager To Regroup During Holiday Break ful, Viewmont, Woods Cross and the southern schools, all appear pretty even at this point. Chris is the kind of kid that I dont have to worry about. Hell stay in shape over the holidays, hell run and hell stay dedicated to the program. DAVIS HAS some other fine grapplers and one happens to be Shawn Robinson at 105. of the ViewRobinson lost in the semi-finain overtime to Gordon of Tournament mont Alta by a rulebook criteria call. Robinson, who had some pretty tough competition in his class last weekend, lost again in the wrestle backs again in overtime. I think Robinson is concerned, but I also think he knows what he has to do. ls I THINK one of the problems weve got is that people wont wrestle with him on their feet. People are staying away from him because they know hes good on his feet. Well work on something to help him. Im not worried about Robinsons aggressiveness, hes getting after people, said Dickson. ROGER REYNARD, after missing the Layton Tournament with an injury, showed great promise at the Viewmont Tournament. Roger won three of five matches and ended up finishing fifth. Reynards greatest moments of the tournament came with victories over View-monDave Blauer and Clearfields Rico Trujillo. Those two victories I thought gave Roger a tremendous shot in the arm of confidence, said Dickson. Nate Hinckley didnt come through like he would have liked to have done, but still placed but also lost to fourth. He lost in the semi-finaLaytons Tracy Jones again and settled for fourth. ts WERE GOING to go very light this week (week before Christmas), we're going to make it a very happy time. Id like to use the term have fun but you dont have fun unless you win. Foul trouble early in the game against the Bees and poor shooting didn't help the Darts. Its hard to play catch-u- p ball when you're said the Dart's head coach. down 19-- Basketball But the thing that will help us right now is taking a good break during the Christmas vacation. Im in favor of the montorium, to get away from the constant pressure, then come back and get after our league. Not taking care of turnovers and a poor shooting performance prevented Davis from making a clean sweep on the basketball court last week. But the thing that may be the frustrating point, is that the Darts beat the toughest of the three teams they played, and lost to the poorest squad. Gardnerfelt his club had a shot of making the state tournament and said further that hed be disappointed if they didnt make the state tournament. We may not have what it takes to win the league, but we can get to the state tournament, with a maximum effort from our players, said Gardner. DAVIS BROUGHT down Cottonwood in overtime, beat Ben Lomond by a slim margin but as Gardner pointed out, "We lost to Box Elder which may have been the poorest team JEFF SAMPSON, a junior on the Dart basscorer over the ketball squad, a double-figur- e past two games, had this to say about the coming weeks. Were all winners, we proved that in football. I dont know what it is, but I just have this feeling that something is going to happen. "Were all going to come alive and everyone will have a great game together. ls we played. Our problems are based on the fact that were gaining experience, but still not playing well. Its a frustrating thing for our players because no one likes to lose. |
