stow stew art and lite his company were first vent here by president Dr brigham ighani young wherefore theredo rhe o upon request from her bar many ny kanab friends and from tho the editor of the history of 0 t the early settlement of this county in the spring ot of 1866 1865 lorenzo I oronzo W R roundy jerad 0 roundy myron S and william ford ford settled in upper up per kanab K acab in that part of the county counts now called alton walter smith mith william smith charles partridge and their families together with a few other families also settled here hera about this time tima these pioneers built log cabins cabins just west of the place where the kane county dairy was at edwards erected that tall fall the roundy brothers returned to center vine ville davis county to get the rest ot their famil leEf soon after they word were gone the remaining families at upper kam I 1 b were called to strengthen lower kanab these settlers left everything and did as an they were bid lorenzo roundy roundly and his families came on to kanab a little later that fall all john D parker who was also on one e ot of these pioneers was delayed on account of sickness but started south from levan juab county the lashof last of november on account of the hostility of the indians along the sevier river he went ment py by way of F allmore ill more beabe county toquerville rockville and pipe springs lie arrived at kanab the third day of 0 january 1866 P through throe feet of snow the snow has never falon so io deep in chanab kanab since that winter the same evening brother parker arrived his little four foai year old son eon died of scarlet fever ever three days after the Park parkers ershad had mooned at pipe springs robert whitman an and james mcintyre were murdered n by navajo indians the sad bad news of tills this terrible mur der was written on an envelope by a herd boy who had escaped and was waa brought to kanab by a pluto plute indian the people looked to L W roundy as a leader although he was not a bishop at that time however lie he called tor for volunteers to carry th the a message to president snow at st georgo georga byron D roundy and oran dark clark answered to this call and were soon boon they started from kanab at 9 p m and reached st george the boxt morning at 10 byron roundy afterward often said that it 4 was the fear oi of that dark I 1 nights ride by loving friends that winter the people of kanab fought savages on one side and death by scarlet fever favor on the other john D parker burled buried two children that win winter and L D roundy him beneath a large tree president snow sent a company ot of men from the dixie country to guard the people on the way at short creek they stopped to water their teams when colonel andrews saw two indian chiefs charlie and coal creek john riding down the canyon colonel andrews and L W met them at a little distance from tho ilia company they shook hands and talked until the tha wagons were indiana promised to go hack back up the canyon and lot let the company pass in peace the men not to stop to oat ant but everyone eve took a sandwich and wore were soon on the way again As darkness began tolover to hover bover around them the capt captain alif andrews discovered three flickering lights on top of the mountain in a trian triangular guar shape andrews was an an indian scout and to rest word was sent to L W roundy to take hla his part ot of the company and go to Ka narra iron county and help build up that village the rest of 0 the tha company were allowed to go to their former homes in the dixie settlements elsewhere th roundy company got to the tha second of july just in time to celebrate the fourth ot of july that fall all president snow took L W roundy to salt lake city and ordained him bishop of Ka Ha narra which position he held until may hay 27 1876 when he was drowned la in the colorado river in 1872 the author 0 of this sketch was waa married to
