We mnst express our thanks to each and all of you for your good patronage. The merchants have been liberal with their advertising; our jobbing department is rushed to death with work all the time; our subscription list has nearly doubled, and we fetl grateful for it all. We know that the people ol this community have cause foi thanksgiving this year also. Our dry farm lands "which were tickled in the spring havf laughed us a most bountecus harvest. Close to J 30, 000 bushels of grain were raised this yiar, where a few years ago, nothing grew before; our banks have greatly increased their business; our stockmen are S lipping out hundreds of cai 1 .ads of cattle to good markets; our business blocks and homes are multiplying rapidly; our flouring mills are running night The Club Commercial gave a little informal social at their parlors the other evening. The members' wives and lady friends were invited; also the members of, the Ladies' Literary Club wera guests. , A very excellent program was rendered in which Mr. and Mr. John P. Meakin were the chief well entertainers. All were pleased with the iustructive except one fea ture which was not scheduled on the program. Pres. Whitmore of the Club vas informed that Mr. Meakin was giving his lectures free, and it was suggested that a collection be taken from all the asse mbled members and their guests to defray his expenses. Mr. Whitmore deemed it improper to collect from the invited guests and called the club members into a ;ommittee room, and the were made there. That was all right, for lectures xnd entertainments cannot be riven for nothing. That which .ve believe exceeded the bound3 f propriety, however, was the iirning of the Commercial Club social iuto a book canvassing aeai, by which not only the members, but the guests as well, were solicited by the author, Mr. Meakin, for the price of his do-atio- ns book. We do not know how all of the lub members regarded the matter, but we do konw that many if them felt that the club had volume ot business which comes before the club is disposed of in a business-lik- e manner and with dispatch. All these qualifica tions and. more, the successful president of the club must have. It is important, too, that an able man be selected at this time. A wave of decline seems to have sweRt over many of the clubs of the state. The Tintic Com mercial Club has ceased to exist; the Richfield Club is in debt; a supposed prosperous club of a neighboring city is away in arrears in the payment of its rent, and they are threatened to be ousted from their building; and others whom we would no care to mention, are in serious financial straits? The Commercial Nephi Club however is in a prosIt has the perous condition. y furnished most rooms and parlors south of Provo ;has money i n the treasu ry a big member-ship- , and a good He who has not a syshabit of saving tematic is without any fixed purpose in life are willing to save the hundreds, but to most of us, money does not come this way.
