Show JUAB COUNTY TIMES. NEPHI. UTAH. GOOD ROADS OPERATION OF A ROAD DRAG One of Advantage It Maintenance of Smooth Surface, Free From Ruta and Troubleaome Hotea. (By II. V, HASKEIX.) The successful operation of a drag involves two principles: The first concerns tlie length and position of the hitch, while the second duals with the position of the driver on the drag. Each Influences the other to a large extent and successful manipulation of the drag Is dependent upon an understanding of both of theni. For ordinary purposes the snatch link, or clevis, ehoifd be fastened far enough toward the blade end of the chain to force the unloaded drag to follow the team at an angle of 45 degrees. This will cause the earth to move along the face of the drag smoothly and will give comparatively light draft to the team, provided the driver rides In the line of draft. The distance from the drag at which the teum la hitched affects the depth of the cutting. Shortening the chain tends to lift the front slab from the .ground; a longer hitch causes the blade to cut more deeply. The length -- UTAH STATE HEWS of the hitch may Road Drag. be regulated by lengthening and shortening the chain at the end which runs through the hole In the blade end of the drag. Usually two horses are enough to pull a drag over an ordinary earth road. The object of the drag Is to move earth toward the center of the roadway and to raise It gradually above the surrounding level. While this Is being accomplished, all mudholes and ruts will be filled, into which traffic will press the fresh earth. The drag does the best work when the soli Is moist, but not sticky. In soils full of loose atones or even small bowlders the drag does good servlco. The loose stones are drawn Into a windrow down the center of the road, while the earth la deposited Around the bowlders In such a way that the surface is leveled. The appisxlmate cost of a split log drag, labor and material Is about three dollars; the coat for dragging one mile, going over several times, team nd driver, is lust what you will make ft from one dollar up. depending on the number of times required to go over the rough road. The advantage to be gained from the pvTftirtent use of a road drag may tie summarised as follows: The maintenance of a smooth, serviceable earth road free from ruts and mudholes. The obtaining of such a road surface with the expenditure of little money and labor in com pari no n w ith the money and labor required for other mot hod i. The reduction of mud In wet weather and of dust in dry weather. MRS. WILLIAMS' Vegetable Matter la Very Important Constituent In Rendering Soils Fertile. There are a number of reasons for this, prominent among which are the following: First, the organic matter contains the essential plant food ele ments and as It decays these element are changed into form available to plants. In otter words, the plant food is put in condition to be used aguin. Second, as the organic matter decay certain acids are produced and these, acting upon the Insoluble mineral constituents in the soil,, dissolve and render them available to plants. Third, many of the changes In the soil are brought about by bacterial action, and decaying organic matter furnishes food for the bacteria so they can grow and multiply and thus render mors mineral plant food elements soluble In the soil water. Plants cannot take up solid foods from the soil; before they can appropriate food it must first he gotten In solution like sugar goes Into solution when put into water. Then there are other ways In which humus benefits the soil. It renders the soil dark In color, and a dark soil absorbs more heat than a light colored one; that Is of considerable advantage In the early spring. A soil tilled with organic matter Is also capable of holding more moisture thun one that Is deficient in this constituent In a dry year this may mean the difference between a fair crop and a complete failure. These being facts, why don't we plow under more organic matter? Why don't we grow more clover or other legumes which actually draw plant food nitrogen from the air and store It up in their tissues later to be converted Into plant food In tho aoil?
