Just as they (Painter and Johnson) arrived in front of the coal yards three men confronted them, one of them, identified by Johnson as Irwin Rucker, whipped out a knife and ran upon Painter thrusting the knife into the side of his neck. Painter fell to the ground, a stream of blood spurting from the wound. Leaving the knife in his victim's neck, where it had severed the jugular vein, Rucker dashed to a mountain fastness. He remain- ed in hiding until about half an hour after the death of Painter, when Deputy Sheriff Otto Whit-becand chief J. W. Grant arrested him. George Painter went from Ne-pto Bingham about two years ago. He was married at Bingham about one year ago. He and his wife had become popular in social circles of the mining camp.
