With two bands playing welcoming music, and hundreds of farmers, clerks, and business men at the ' depot, the large crowd waited patiently for the Farmers' Special due at 11:30, but. which did not arrive til! after 1 o'clock, when all the crowd had gone home for their noon day meal. At 2 p. m. the Tabernacle was crowded with eager listeners who had come to learn. Ray Gowers, president of the High School Agriculture C!ub, introduced Prof. L- - A. Merrill who was greeted with rounds of applause. 0. C. Gregg of Minnesota was then announced to speak on the dairy cow. He urged the farmers to take the cattle they now have, for the native has the vigor and is acclimated, and breed up from these. Some of the points necessary in a good dairy cow were a big body in order that there might be a large intake of food; a sharp, sloping back behind the shoulders; a loose clasping form of udder; the milk wells near the navel, and a good full eye. He urged to breed, then feed. His bits of wisdom and sound advice were interspersed with humor, which made Mr. Gregg a very popular lecturer. Earl Bennion is a young man who is a graduate of the U- A. C. and is making a great success of the hog business at Taylorsville, and he proceeded to tell the farmers of the big money there was in the hog business, and how he had made 1400 per cent - from his small start in hogs. Pork can be produced from 2 2 to 3 cts. cheaper than any other kind of meat, and it brings a higher price. Utah has a far tetter climate and feed than most of the other states, and yet she was shipping in 5,000,000 worth of pork every year. Prof. W. II. Homer then told why he quit teaching for orcharding because there was so much more money in it. Utah is unsurpassed for fruitgrowing. The collection of Utah apple sent to Cornell University exhibit won the blue ribbon for being the best display of any state. Spencer of Provo realized 11,000 on less than 1 acra of 0 year old apple trees; and the speaker obtained $1,000 from 2 acres of peaches. ft Prof. Merrill spoke on the comparative value of dry farm 1-- wheals and announced that the result of the experiments showed the Turkey Red it be better than the Kofod for Utah. It was a better producer -- by 7 bu. per acre; better drouth register; a better wheat for the combin ed harvester; and r.iode a 20 per cent better loaf of bread. The speaker also stated that while they had secured a wheat root 7 ft long, they expected to got one 12 ft in length this year, showing the great depth to which the cereals will go after water. The housewives' meeting at the High School buildfng presided over by Mrs. T. C. Winn was well attended. The lecture by Miss Dudley was much appreciated. In the evening a big meeting was held in the Tabernacle. state, and endeavor to prevent the importing of five million dollars worth of meat each year, and also a large portion of dairy and poultry supplies. In the evening a big banquet was tendered the agricultural experts, and the members of the Governor's party. Pres. Andrews extended a hearty welcome to all, and especially to Prof. Merrill's party of instructors and the representative of the Salt Lake route. T. C. Winn as toastmaster handled the program well; Governor Spry paid a tribute to the dompstic science department for the able manner in which they conducted the ban 1 . quec uooo toasts were also re sponded to by Douglass White, benator A.
