An Oregon As to the squeeze gate and dehorning chute shown herewith, this Is the standard style used throughout the west excepting, of course, a few minor modifications which do not affect the principle Involved. The plan given Is for branding on the right hip but it may be easily modified for branding on any spot desired, writes Ermine L. Potter of Oregon Agricultural college, in Breeders' Gazette The four posts used for the corners should be strong and set deeply In the ground, about five feet apart In the clear. The right-hanposts should exfeet above the ground and tend the others seven feet above ground. For framing lumber is about right, although strong poles may be used just as well. Inch stuff Is all right for the siding The left side Is made stationary and the bottom Is set In about fifteen Inches The right side Is hinged by two bolts. G and II. The sides must not be much more than ten Inches apart at tbe bottom. The squeezing power Is applied by a block and tackle attached at the points A and B. Two small double pulleys and an old lariat rope will do very well. The front end Is made like a common stanchion. The post J Is stationary while K la fastened at the bottom with a single bolt end Is held In place at the top by the lever E. which la notched on the under side to catch on the top of the corner post When It Is desired to open the stanchion this lever Is raised to disengage the notch and K pulled back against the corner post. , Tbe post J should be placed pretty well toward the left corner post, since tbe animal Is pressed against the left side during the operation. This also allows the stanchion to be opened very wide so that the larger cattle may get through without difficulty The right side la shown cut down so that tbe blp may be readily reached with the Iron Any part of tbe siding may be cut down Just as well. In any case tbe side should be higher than Is shown in the dram Ing. especially In front It Is shown tow In this case so that the construction may be better Illustrated. In using the chute, the bar C Is removed and the stanchion opened, but the bar D Is left In Its place. If this bar Is out the animal may go right on through the stanchion; In fact. It may be necessary to use more than one bar In this place. Just as soon as the animal la in place clamp the stanchion hut, puf up the bar C and close the squeeze gate with rope I. It Is often found with thin stuff that the movable sides press on the hip bones Instead of on the fleshier parts or the body. This may knock tbe skin off the hips and cause considerable pain besides not holding the animal securely. This defect, however, may be easily remedied by nailing horizontally along each aide, a piece 2x10 Incbea or 2x8 Inchea just below the level of the anlmal'a hips. This puts the pressure on the sides Instead of on the btp bones. These pieces may Just as well be put on at the very first, as they sre pretty sure to be needed. Fairbanks, A'nska. The Fairbanks expedition to Mount McKlnley, the tallest peak In North America, reached the summit April II, after a climb of ono month from the base. No traces of Or. Frederick A. Cook's alleged accent were found. Thomas IJoyd. leader of the expedition, arrived here Tuesday niht. His companions were Daniel Patterson, W. H. Taylor and Charles McGonnlgle, und all reached the top of the great mountain. The expedition, which left Fairbanks December 15, while the controversy over Dr. Conk's disputed ascent was still raging, was financed by Gus Peterson and Wl!llam McPhee of this city. The plan was to go Into camp on the mountain as high as possible, and, probably about the middle ol May, make a dash for the siimmll. The obstacles encountered were not so great as bad been predicted. Font camps were established diirit.g the ascent and a trail was blazed all the way to the crest. Up to 12.000 feet the climbing did not present unusual dim cultles. For ine next 4.000 feet the way led over a steep Ice field, which at first seemed t'j forbid further prog ress, but through which, upon exploration. It was found possible to locate a pnl n. The final dash to the top was made from the IG.oilO-foo- t camp. Mount McKlnley terminates in Twin Peaks of equal height, one somewhat rounded and covered with snow, the other composed of bare and wind swept rocks. On the rock peak the Falrlmnks climbers placed an American flag In a monument of stones. The expedition, which was provided with Dr. Cook's maps and book, endeavored to follow his alleged route, but utter'y failed to verify any part of his story of an ascent. ' The Newfoundland Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis Is carrying on a vigorous and necessary campaign this year in the Island. Tbe death rate from the disease In Newfoundland Is very large. About one In every five of the total population dies of It, and, what Is worse, In the laat .six years the death rate, which la stationary or decreasing elsewhere, has Increased about 60 per cent. This is due largely to the native horror of fresh air In the house.
