Show Juab County Times Successor To The NEPIII RECORD JACOB COLEMAN, R. Editor & Prop'r. J. HENRIOD, Manager. Regular price $2.00 per ytir. In advance $1.50 per year, Published weekly, every Friday at Nephi, Utah. , Our Dances Wc had the pleasure of attend ing a dancing party recently at Provo given by the younger members of the faculty of the B. Y. U.. and also some of the prominent citizens of that city. We were most favorably im pressed witn the manner in which the affair was conducted. Dancing commenced at 7:30 p. m. and lasted until 10:30 p. m. Tnose who attended nad an en joyable time; went home refreshed, and felt better the next day or the ir eveni ng's pleasure. We thought at the time, how differently were the dances conducted here at Nephi. The young people do not commence to go to a ball until long after bed time; then dance until twelve ' or one o'clock; when another hour is devoted to strolling home and saying "good night", so that the next morning they awaken feeling "all in", not fit to go to school, to their work, or even assist around home. They are generally irritable for want of sleep, and not in a fit condition to associate with the different members of the family. An eminent lecturer once said that the test of whether an evening's pleasure has been a recreation or a dissipation is, " how do you feel the morning after!" Applying this test to those who attends the dances here, their's has without question, been a dis-ipatio- n. Not only is the keeping of such unreasonable hours detrimental to the health of the party concerned but his capacity for work the next day is greatly lessened. If a student or teacher in school, he is bound to be more or less listless and inefficient in all that he attempts to do. The eme, ployer only gets about full of errors, slip-sho- d work, and plainly speaking, he is cheated out of a full day's labor by his dissipated employee. all due to a foolish custwn that has existed in Nephi and other country towns for scores, of years. that " it is not in styl t to go to a aance until about 10c30 p. m." This , is but a beginning of their campaign for civic betterment, which they are plan ning to take' up in the spring. During the winter months by different methods, they are going to raise "the necessary means to do their work. We wish to heartily commend this movement, set on foot by the Ladies' Literary Club. Our central square, our city park, are surely in a bad way. The trees are of a variety that either prick with throns, or are so short lived that they soon decay. no citizen oi the town ever thinks of strolling in either place. for recreation, ever dreams that there is a park in Nephi. But not only will they confine their efforts to the park; they are also going to work for better streets. And we believe that they will get them. The exper ience of the past is that when a body of women unite together for a common purpose, they succeed in accomplishing their ends. The Commercial Club has been brought out for judging and scoring. This is a wonderful opportun- ity for advancement both intellectually and materially, and we hope that every farmer and housewife on the east side of the county will enroll themselves in this school. It isn't going to be a school where lessons will have to be prepared but one where you can listen, learn and feel free to ask all the questions you wish that perplex you on the farm or in the home. To those of you whose early education has been , somewhat neglected, here is a splendid opportunity to improve yourselves and increase your chances for success, both in your work, on the farm and in the home. These schools have been held . . in St George, Cedar City, and other towns, and the newspapers speak most highly of the great good done the community. We hope everyone will get his or her work "done up" , so as to attend this school next week. W. W.
