Dry Farming Produces Crops Where Rainfall Is Limited. Immense Tracts of Land Which Can not Be Brought Under Irrigation and Utilization as Farms Vastly Important. Dry fanning, sometimes called "arid" or "soil culture" farming. Is the production of crops without irrigation In regions that possess hut a limited rainfall. The economic Importance of the problem will be obvious to anyone who considers how much land in the west comes under this category. The results attained by individual farmers and government agricultural stations are such as to encourage effort and inspire hope on the part of those directly Interested in dry farming. And the community at large is hardly less interested than the farmers who are toiling at a solution of the problem. A considerable portion of the west Is desert land, now, or soon to be, under irrigation and wonderfully fertile. A large portion Is irfeclalmably bad. re And there are immense semi-arigions which cannot be brought under Irrigation and where there is less than 20 Inches average annual rainfall. The utilization of these lands for other agricultural purposes than grat ing would mean a highly important of wealth to the United States. regions Farming in the semi-ariwas formerly of the "hit or miss" vari ety the growing of a wide acreage of crops with rough husbandry and with proilts practically wiped out in dry years. l!ut better farming methods are being applied, the aim of which are mainly to secure the collection within the soil of all the water falling on it, the retention within the soil of all the water absorbed, and the growth of conditions. crops suitable to The method pursued is "summer fallowing" planting every other year, but cultivating every year. The soil is plowed deep, harrowed three or four times a year and covered with a blanket of soil "mulch" to conserve the moisture. The selection of the right crops and the right variety of each is of prime The durum or macaroni importance. wheat and Turkey lied are well adapted to In corn, a regions. small, early maturing variety is recommended by experts, with Kaffir corn and sorghum for feed crops. There is great likelihood that certain varieties of alfalfa are widely suitable. Oats, barley, millet, field peas, western wheat grass, potatoes and other root vegetables have given good results on the plains. The necessity (under proper methods of dry farming) of cropping the soil in alternate years, made the 160 acre limit of the homestead law seem unsuitable to the needs of the farmA recent er of tbe regions. smendment to the land raws permits the homesteader to enter 320 acres of dry land in specified localities, that amount being generally considered as needful for the successful application of the "summer fallowing" method. The results of dry farming must obviously be proportioned to the thoroughness, experience and intelligence of the individual farmer a condition which, of course, applies more or less to ail farming. Those about to engage in dry farming are reminded by the United States department of agriculture that the farmer "should Investigate carefully the possibilities of tbe particular region In which be expects to settle; be should have clearly In mind beforehand the kind of crop which be will produce, and he should not undertake dry farming If a failure of crops at tbe beginning will mean to him a complete and permanent disaster." d semi-ari- semi-ari- d semi-ari- Testing the dry farming theory has become general in almost all of the western states, and foremost among the experimenters are the various etate agricultural colleges. Those methods which have proven best are given to the public In numerous bulletins. The State Agricultural college of Montana, after prolonged Investigation as to the method to be pursued in order to Insure good crops, has formulated and published the following, which may serve as a fair Indicator of the purposes of the system: (a) The formatlou of a deep seed bed to act as a soil moisture reservoir. (b) Careful packing of the soil to establish the contact t'f soil particles and assist in the rise of moisture from the lower layers. (c) Constant surfact cultivation of the soil, when possible, tu prevent the escape of the moisture. (d) Summer fallowing each alternate year, and by summei cultivation, storing the moisture for the succeeding crop. (e) Growing hardy strains of the different crops, so that the largest possible percentage of the moisture present will be utilized. (f) Growing fall and eaily ripening strains of spring grain, In order that growth may be attained dm tag the growing months. I. e., April, May, June and July. (g) Thin seeding so that the moist ure may not be wasted in producing numerous stems, and none be present to ripen the grain. (h) Growing inter-tillecrops like corn and potatoes as the possible con stant cultivation retains the moisture for growth. (1) Growing some nitrogen-gatherincrops occasionally to keep up the sup ply of this element in the soil. Dut it Is quite true, also, that it Is impossible to fix a hard and fast rule for "dry farming," for, in every state and under every different condition of climate. It is necessary for the farmer to give careful study to his own requirements. d METHODS OF DRY FARMING Confusion as to What Is Really Meant and What It Really la Conserving Moisture In Soil. Much confusion regarding dry farming methods Is due to a mis conception of what It Is. Dry farming Is not the discovery of a new system In agricultural methods, but simply the application of a very old one. That the ground becomes porous if left us disturbed and that the sun draws out moisture through the pores are facts science bas known for years. Brief. ly, all that Is essential In following the dry farming method Is first to loosen the soil before the rainy season so that It may become more thoroughly saturated and then, by frequent harrowing, prevent the forma tion of pores and thus conserve the moisture. Where very little rain fall cultivation Is possible only by lh test of actual experience that where there Is a precipitation of from 15 tc 20 Inches, somewhat distributed during the season, It Is possible to retain enough of this 'moisture In the soil to essliy supply many valuable crops during the growing season and som authorities asert that this may be done where the annual perclpitatlon Is less than 13 Inches. From the general talk anyone would suppose that there were some special new methods. Ideas and Implements which must be used In order that dry farming may be a success. As a matter of fact dry farming is the oldest kind of farming, for crops have ben rallied since sgriculture began with scanty amount of moisture furoiabed by rainfall. Dry farming Is raising crops with natural precipitation with no artificial application of water to the soil. In the arid west, where It has been considered Impossible to rslxe crops save by Irrigation, dry farming means the raising of profitable crops where the rainfall Is as low as eight Inches per annum. This kind of farming has been practiced In California for over 49 years and In eastern Oregon and pastern Wsphlngfon for over 25 years. In these ststes It has been demonstrated that by deep plowing and a proper system , of cultivation, two years moisture may be held for one tiig crop. This Is the system of sumf mer fallowing and tilling the farm area without crop each year, using the other half to produce crops.
