Checks The government has received $99.40 in settlement for a single sugar pine tree which was cut in trespass in the Stanislaus national forest, in California, and which yielded more than enough actual subd lumber to build a urban frame house. The tree scaled 18,933 board feet and was valued at $5.25 per thousand feet. Not many trees contain enough lumber to build a fourfoot Doard walk a mile lone, and this is believed to be the first case on record in which a single tree fell ed in a national forest was valued at almost $100 on the stump, although national forest timber in California is frequently sold at considerably higher rates. The forest service has purchased barb wire and local stockmen will fence a dangerous bog which covers about ten acres near Mountain City, in the Humboldt nation al forest of northern Nevada. The bog surrounds a hot spring of whieh the water is excellent for bathing purposes for the relief of rheumatism. In the spring, how ever, the mud in the holes about the spring is pushed up eight or ten inches above the level of the ground round about, and then be comes dry and crusts over. This is deceiving to people, who have sunk in the bogs to their arm pits, and to stock, which are unable to extricate themselves. Hitherto of head been stock have many lost there each year. The applications for range in dicate that more cattle and fewer sheep will be grazed on the Weis- er forest, in western Idaho, the coming season. Present snowfall on the Weiser is only CO per cent of the average. ? J. H. ManrJerfield, A. G. P. A. Salt Lake City. IV. |
