Show EFFECT OF PROTEIN FEEDS. i At the Nebraska station hogs wero I differently fed to detormlno the effect 1 of protein and carbonaceous f3ds in 4 tbe Internal organs and bones of tho animals. One lot was fed on corn alone, and another on corn and alfalfa. Tho slaughter test showed larger liver and lungs and better bone in tho lot fed alfalfa. Prof. Burnett says: This slaughter tost shows that by supplying more protein, In this caso by feeding alfalfa, we get a greater devef- opment of internal organs and moro health nnd vigor. Undoubtedly if more attention wero given to supplying supply-ing such foods as will bring about a healthy organism, losses from cholera and other diseases would bo greatly reduced. re-duced. The strength of the thigh bones was tested by pr.vldlnBsuDPOrtsAat, , ,,.w:HffiMtotV" "both" enas," applying vressuro In tbo smamM' mlddlo. This test was made In a ma- , p chino for testing strength of materials. H Tho bones ot the corn-fed pig mcas- 1 ured one-sixteenth of an Inch larger in 1 diameter. One bone from the corn-fed H pig broke under a pressure of 320 pounds and tho other 330 pounds. Ono of the bones of the corn-and-alfalfa-fed pigs broko at 500 pounds and tho other at 520 pounds. From this test It Is evident that breakdowns, which often occur in heavy corn-fed hogs, nre tho fault of the feed rather thanho animal. It furthor shows that the ability of the hog to stand up well on a legs Is a matter of density ot bono rather than slzo. . |
