M Landon to deliver 18 votes voles of Kansas They had counted on Herbert Herbert Her tier bert Hoover for scattering votes from all over the country And finally they had counted on Senator Arthur 11 Ii to deliver not only the 38 votes of Michigan but scattering delegates in other dele dele- What the Taft people never realized realized real real- apparently was that of this particular group of leaders only one Alt All Landon really reany dominated his delegation OUSTED HAMILTON HAl Landon had shown his strength ina in ina ina a delegation caucus when all the prestige of John Hamilton as national national national na na- chairman was not enough to induce the Kansas delegates to reelect reelect reelect re- re elect h Hamilton amilton as national commit commit- teeman from the Sunflower state Landon wanted Hamilton thrown out and thrown out he was Landon came to Philadelphia strongly of the opinion that Willkie I should hould not be nominated lie He was inclined to favor Taft But when the Taft lieutenants not realizing the bitter enmity between Landon and kept telling Landon how much Hoover was helping Taft Landon began to fear that Hoover would be the power behind the throne in the Tuft Tail campaign if Taft were nominated and in his administration administration adminis tra tion if il he I should hould be elected That was no dish for Landon so so when Dewey was eliminated and the fight narrowed to Taft and Willkie he threw the 18 Kansas votes to the victor Just why hy the Taft people counted on may never be made public It was well known in Washington Wash ington for 10 days before the convention con that if il the Michigan senator senator sena tor could net get the nomination for himself he would prefer r Willkie Wilkie The Taft people of course knew |
