B WHITMAN ALUMINUM l TAINT PAINT A paint Is ts coming into inte A very general use as a priming coat on bare wood to be finished with any kind of oil all paint or of enamel The liquid part of aluminum num mum paint is varnish which for satisfaction sat should be of high quality for outside work spar varnish should be used The aluminum is in the form of flakes of a fineness that Is suited to the work Aluminum Aluminum num paint should be mixed as it is used and to make this possible manufacturers supply it in a double can the lower and larger part of the can containing the varnish and the upper and smaller can the dry aluminum powder The proportion is about two pounds of the powder to the gallon of varnish When aluminum paint is applied the metal flakes float to the top of the film of varnish After hardening barden harden ing log the varnish is thus covered with witha a thin sheet of metal and it is this that gives aluminum paint its usefulness use as an undercoat The life of paint depends on the firmness I with which the undercoat is attached attached at to the surface to which it is applied The loosening of paint is due to the breaking of this bond The ultra violet rays of the sun are destructive to the oils In paint and andare andare andare are one of the causes of paint fail ure ure we With the first coat of varnish protected by its surface of aluminum alum alum- mum the bond Is given a much longer life than when it is exposed to the destructive violet rays Aluminum being opaque this paint is excellent for a first coat when a surface that is dark In color is to be repainted a lighter color or white The aluminum will hide bide the dark tone and one coat of paint painton on top of it may be sufficient to give the desired results With ordinary ordinary nary paint at least three coats will usually be needed to hide bide the dark color underneath There is a great difference in aluminum paints and it is always well worth while to get a high grade In manufacture aluminum flakes Bakes acquire a fine coating of grease which if U not removed will prevent their close bonding with the varnish The color will then be gray In high grades of aluminum flakes Oakes or powder the grease has bas been removed removed re reo moved and the final Onal color then remains remains re reo mains brilliant I had an experience that showed the difference A ceilIng ceiling ceil cell ing was finished with aluminum paint with the idea that it would reflect re reo fleet the light but to my regret the tone instead of ot having the brilliancy bril Nancy that I 1 expected was gray Later when the ceiling was repaired repaired re reo paired I 1 finished the new part with witha a top quality aluminum paint This finish was brilliant and has remained re re- so In aluminum paint asin asIn as asIn In almost everything else high quality fly ity is well worth an additional price e CI By Roger Roeer e r B.
