Show Graveside Services Held For Parowan War Hero The body of Sgt. MIlo C. Mor-tensen, Mor-tensen, killed on the Island of Luzon, March 31, 1935, arrived in Parowan for burial, Wednesday Wednes-day July 14. Graveside services were held for him the same afternoon af-ternoon at 2 o'clock in the Faro-was Faro-was cemetery under the direction of Parowan Post No. 20, American Ameri-can Legion. One of the first men from Iron county to enter the service under un-der the Selective Service Act, he began his training in November, 1940 and had been overseas since December. 1942. He was among the group that raised the first American flag during the invasion of the Philippines, Phil-ippines, after taking part in the recapture of other south Pacific Islands from the Japs. His letter describing the release re-lease of the prisoners from the famed Japanese Cabanatuan pil-son pil-son camp in the Philippines was published in the Congressional record in commemoration of Washington's birthday, and he was awarded the Bronze Star for valor for his part In the prisoners pris-oners release. Born October 27, 1914, he attended at-tended school in Parowan and was graduated from the Parowan nign scnooi in la.JJ. He is survived by his father, Samuel C. Mortensen, and the following brothers and sisters, Albert, Frank, Vern and Clifford Mortensen; Mrs. Frona Cart-wright Cart-wright and Mrs. Pearl May of Parowan, and Mrs. Olive Carroll, Car-roll, Pioche, Nevada. |
