Show Explorer Groups Conduct Emergency Search Program ! Training and experience In. emergency servica training was received by members of the First and Fourth Ward Explorer Posts Thursday afternoon, as the Iron County Sheriff's office directed them in a simulated Lost Child Search In the hills south of Cedar City as part of their civil defense de-fense and emergency service program. pro-gram. The members of the posts about 20 in all, were mobilVed under their Explorer mobilization mobiliza-tion program, whereby the sher-, iff called one boy In each post and they in turn called another boy, who called two others, etc. Both units were entirely mobil- ied and at the sheriff's office within nine minutes after the sheriff made the first call. They were taken to the search area and the search was organized. organ-ized. The trail had previously boon made by Larry Olds, nine-year-old son of Mr." and Mrs. Sheldon Olds, who marked the trail by tracks, orange peelings, gum wrapers or torn bits of clothing. The search was over a distance of some three miles. Assisting In the search were Arvile Asay, explorer advisor for the First Ward group, and, George Banks. The entire search was under un-der the direction of Sheriff Otto Fife, Dalian Williams, deputy sheriff, and Stan Davis of the Cedar City police department. Valuable assistance was given by Al Thompson, his son Terry, and Ross Hoyt, members of the Cedar Aero Club, who flew over the area, directing the search on the ground after they had found the boy. Emergency first aid was rendered ren-dered to the boy for a broken arm, sprained ankle, shock, and cuts and bruises; he was then placed upon a stretcher and brought out of the hills to the Jeep, which was waiting to transport trans-port the boy to the base camp. The base camp was established establish-ed by the Fourth Ward troop of i Boy Scouts under the direction of Douglas Manning. They pre- , pared the meal for the searchers, including baked beans, hot choc-elate, choc-elate, sourdough biscuits and j baked apple pie, all cooked on the spot. The search party, the sheriffs party and the searching airplane i kept in close touch with each other through the use of walkie-I walkie-I talkie radio. Mobilization of the Fourth 'Ward group was under the direction di-rection of Melvln IftannJng, vice president of that group, and Kent Smith, president of the First Ward group. The search took approximate ly 2'4 hours, over a rugged terrain ter-rain of about three miles. 1 The groups will next go Into a five-week Ped Cross First Aid training program under the direction di-rection of Glade Smith, of Parowan. Paro-wan.
