Show Miss Egan Married. Through the New Century of Washington, Wash-ington, D. C., we learn of the marriage of iliss Patrice Egan, daughter of the Hon. Maurice Francis Egan, LL. D., United States minister plenipotentiary to Denmark. ana" Elmer Murphy, of the legation. The wedding took place in Copenhagen. Miss Egan is the eldest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Egan, and always al-ways enjoyed prominence in the best circles of Washington society. Her father fa-ther became a very close personal friend of the president, and Miss Egan was a frequent and welcome guest at the White House. She accompanied her father to Denmark and has had the entree to the most exclusive social circles of the Danish capital. The marriage is the culmination of a friendship which began almost with the childhood of the narties, for Mr. Murphy Mur-phy was a student at Notre Dame university, uni-versity, where he was graduated, at the time that Egan was professor of English Eng-lish literature there. Mr. Murphy aimed to be a master in literature and had also strong leanings toward journal-ism. journal-ism. After Dr. Egan went to the Cath olic university at Washington to be . professor of English literature and while Bishop Conaty was rector of the university, Mr. Murphy entered as a post-graduate student. Dr. Egan always al-ways had a very warm attachment for his pupil in whom he saw possibilities of a successful career In literature. After Aft-er Mr. Murphy won his master's degree by a very noteworthy thesis on Dramatic Dra-matic Literature, he obtained a position j as literary critic on a loading journal of Chicago. From that position he was invited by Bishop Conaty to take charge of The Tidings of Los Angeles, the official organ of the diocese of Mon terey and Los Angeles, and he occupied the position of editor and general manager man-ager from October, 1901, to February. 1006. His health was not of the best and he reigned in order to engage in outside work for a time, and returned to Washington where ho was soon called again into the field of journalism and occupied the position of correspondent correspon-dent for a syndicate of newspapers. In the meantime Dr. Egan was appointed in 1907 by President Roosevelt to his present position as minister to Denmark and Mr. Murphy was offered the position posi-tion of secretary of legation. Dr.- Egan has long been a prominent figure in literary circles and is a. recognized rec-ognized authority on sonnets. He has written a number of novels and also several purely literary works. He has been identified with the teaching of literature lit-erature in several prominent Catholic colleges and is regarded as one of th( ; leaders of Catholic society.
