Show MINING REVIEW. INTER-MOUNTA- IN Gold Deposition in Geological Rock Formations other sulphide compounds are chiefly found and the Cyanide Process. in the direct line of the volcanic channels By Prof. II. Hirsching. Perhaps a few of our miners have noticed ahcl studied the moraine deposits on the western slopes of the Wasatch mountains, located south of Salt Lake city and extend- ii g as far south as to American Forks. On st me places the evidence of glacial action c; n be readily observed on the surface, on o hers, the moraines are covered up by allu- v. al deposition and on others again they are removed entirely by errosive action. The entire country bears testimony of a great ice epoch and that an immense glacier has been in existence and that its movement was in a westerly direction, On such localities, where upheavels of the Archan period have stopped tl.e motion, the ice has accumulated with its golden treasure in immense masses and a kind of a natural concentration process was carried on for an indefinite time. However, if natural openings through the Oquirrh mountains were at hand, the movement of this immense glacier was gradually going forward to the southwest until it reached its final destination in the half tropical section of the North American continent. If we travel along the pathway of this mighty we find on its road, eratic rocks glacier D everywhere and our celebrated Mercur district is no exception to this rule. We find upon the silurian formation to the south of the Mercur district the remains of this glaciers action. Glacial remains are found the debris of the metamorphic rocks in the Mulde like formed sections of the Oquirrh mountains. The limerocks, which belong to the carboniferous epoch are occasionally noticeable between the metamorphic rocks and this exposed carboniferous formation is the result of upheavels and faults. W e further notice the action of erosion, where the pebbles of the glacier are covered and mixed with igneous rocks and sometimes they are cemented together forming a genuine conglomerate. The many varieties of ogeological rocks found in the Mercur district viz., altered plutonic rocks, all kinds of igneous rocks such as dionite, phenolite, etc., are the result of erosive action, having been deposited from the main mountain chain. These evidences demonstrate that three different geological epochs have been the cause of the present formation in Mercur. First upon the Archcan rock formations we notice then and there volcanic craters with lateral sub-- j teranean extensions, which have deposited obsidian and other volcanic rocks in their Neighborhood and have exposed the Archean formation, then came ihc cover from the ice in augite-andcsit- ! e, period and partially this cover was replaced r mixed with the igneous rocks by erosion. The deposits of realgar and orpiment and and some lateral sublimation has taken place in all directions, but the greater the distance is from its source the smaller is the quantity of the sulphides; the porosity of the layers of rocks dictated the distance and has stopped sometimes the lateral sublimation process entirely, and there it has deposited nests of great magnitude of the sulphides. The geological formation of the Mercur district is highly interesting to the student of natures laboratory, yet the chief question is the extraction of the gold from the gangue I and shall take pleasure to speak about that subject in my next article. 7 Ore and Bullion. The weeks business gives evidence of in- creasing ore production in the State, and the total transactions show a heavy increase in the ore purchases over the previous week. The base bullion product of the smelters, however, shows a decrease in the total, although the output of the Pennsylvania shows an increase. Mr. F. H. Officer, resident manager of this company, has returned from a consultation with President Schwartz but has nothing yet to announce as to the future policy in regard to the running of the smelter. The total of fine product is swelled by the receipt at Walker Bros., Bank, of nineteen bars of Alice bullion. ORE PURCHASES. A istract of Recent Mining Decisions. McCornick & Co T. R.
