For many families it could mean a final fling if traffic accidents or drownings should take their toll. Each year these types of accidents result in fatalities, permanent disability, and physical, mental and financial suffering to the victim and his family. The majority of vehicle accidents are the result of individual excesses. These include speed, distance, exhaustion, confidence, eating and drinking. They are usually the result of attitudes or lack of knowledge or experience. Attitudes allow us to think that an accident is something that always happens to the other fellow. Lack of knowledge or experience in the areas of vehicle operation and recreational activities are particularly critical during holiday and vacation periods. The Labor Day weekend can be an accident-frehappy time for all if concentrated efforts are made to eliminate qersonal errors. Make the Labor Day weekend a time for relaxation, instead of one of excesses. (AFNS) Old Photo Albums . - YOU'RE NOT What is the mystery crash? It's the one-ca- r accident, the kind that involves the single car in a traffic mishap. Every year this type of acd cident results in of all traffic deaths. You're very busy ond there's just no time to write. But your loved ones find. time. When they don't hear from you they worry ond then write to someone else to find out if you're okay. If you need any more reason to write, think of the embarrassment of hoving to give an official explanation of why you haven't taken a moment to drop a line to your family. Dead men don't fill out accident reports and those who do survive often won't admit their mistakes, and it's a mystery why it happens to anyone at all since it's the one type of accident over which the driver has almost complete control. The "mystery crash" or one-caccident has been cited by Air Force safety officials as the single major contributor to the high accident fatality rate for the first six months of 1971. Air Force accident death rate is running more than 28 per cent above the 1970 figure with 240 fatalities as opposed to 175 last year. Air Force commanders are being asked to emphasize "Mystery accident during the Events" a program aimed at reducing the one-ca- r upcoming Labor Day holiday. Mystery crashes can be prevented by learning their causes and avoiding them. Is it the road? Is it the weather? Is it the vehicle? Is it another driver? Or, is it you? One thing is certain, of all the kinds of traffic accidents, the mystery crash is the most preventable because it's the one over which the driver has the most control. Slow down on curves. Watch for helpful road hazard signs. Adjust speed to weather conditions. Know how to drive annd stop on slippery pavement. Keep your vehicle in top shapeespecially brakes, steering, tires, lights, horn and wipers. Know how to avoid a collision without running smack into trouble off the road. Keep alert. If you're tired, pull off the road and rest. Drive defensively. (AFNS) t. ar When is an Egg a Bomb? by Kenneth E. Allen, Fire Protection Branch asked questions about w WOL, until the girl bit it. A recent article in the National Safety Council Safety Newsletter points up a new area of concern with respect to microwave ovens. Many of these ovens are used in snack bars today and they are very handy to heat foods rapidly, but they can be dangerous. A girl put two shelled hard boiled eggs in the microwave oven for a quick warm-up- . They were in the oven a short time and were not hot to the touch. But when she bit into one an explosion ripped the egg apart, causing the heated yolk to burn her eyelids, lips, tongue and cheeks. The microwave oven had heated the yolk to the point where it was rapidly expanding.
