Operation of private motor vehicles and recreational activities are ninning neck and neck for the unheralded honors. A horse, a motorcycle, a touch football game, a runaway vehicle and private motor vehicles are the culprits. Details of what happened in most of these instances would indicate that our ability to think to protect ourselves had reached a new low. Don't think you are an equestrian acrobat the first time you straddle your mount Motorcycles? They are great sport as long as you stay on top and in control. Don't allow your enthusiasm to exceed your physical limitation in athletic competition. When a vehicle starts rolling down hill, don't get in front of it, no matter how much of a Goliath you think you are. You could feel all rundown after such an experience. Alighting from a moving vehicle is extremely hazardous and can result in serious injury. Think before you leap. Don't take a chance on "getting out" of an accident situation. Stay out of it. Our experience and training in accident prevention should have taught us to apply these principles to protect ourselves both while at work and at play. The "Mission Safety 70" program was inaugurated nearly four years ago, with an established goal of reducing accidents and saving lives. Our efforts in this direction have paid off in real tangible dividends since its inception. Let's keep our stock in safety and accident prevention well managed and paying off in dividends of longer, lives. happier, accident-fre- e Each state has some form of a financial responsibility law. Most states require car owners or operators involved in an accident to show evidence of financial responsibility. This evidence can be in the form of liability insurance, cash, bond or releases. Failure to produce evidence of financial responsibility The United Nations 126 nations strong observes its 23rd birthday Oct. 24. The U.N. Charter came into force in 1945, patterning much of its organization after the old League of Nations. A U.N. General Assembly resolution in 1948 led to designation of Oct. 24 as United Nations Day. The Assembly recommended that the day "be devoted to making known the aims and achievements of the United Nations." The United Nations works constantly and quietly behind the scenes to solve international problems and disputes before they can cause violence and become a threat to world peace. A score of agencies under its sponsorship are dedicated to promoting the economic and social advancements of mankind. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO), conducts a broad, vigorous program to immental and physical prove the health of people WHO provides health education and traineverywhere. ing for nurses and technicians. There's scarcely an aspect of health or medicine that has not been touched by WHO'S efforts. However, 23 years is a short span in which to measure the work of a world peace organization as large and complex as the United Nations. Only in prolonged and painstaking evaluation can future historians assess the precise degree of success of the United Nations. surance. If a driver is convicted of an offense such as reckless driving, or driving while in- toxicated, he may be required to file with the state's motor vehicle department a certificate of insurance, cash or bond as a guarantee of ability to pay for possible future accidents. The requirement applies regardless of whether or not an accident is involved. The driver's insurance company can furnish the required certificate, usually with an increase in premium costs.
