Barnes' tool any one of the wires can be removed and replaced in about 10 minutes without disturbing the rubber coating and other wires. Previously this operation took as long as eight hours including the hardening of the rubber coating after replacement of a new wire. The small hand tool will be usable on missile, aircraft, computer and test electrical equipment. Mr. Barnes estimates the tool and its accessories will sell for approximately $30. 50 Mr. Barnes began working on his invention in 1960 at his automobile salvage yard in Uintah and applied for the patent in June, 1961. He has allowed all government agencies free use of his tool, but intends to sell it to industry on a percentage basis. Presently, Mr. Barnes is con templating several manufactur ers' offers for commercial production but hasn't decided whether to sell his patent for a lump sum or accept payment via the royalty route. When he applied for the patent in 1961 he already had received $315 from the base suggestion committee and $25 from submitting an invention to the patent office. He now will receive an additional $75 from the suggestion committee as a result of his invention being patented. An employee of Hill AFB for the past 14 years, Mr. Barnes has submitted approximately 40 suggestions with a total pay-oof more than $1,000. Although Mr. Barnes is overjoyed at his recent good fortune he isn't sitting on his laurels. He has three other patents pend ing in Washington.
