George Dewey could say that "the office of the Presideit is not such a very difficult one to fill, his duties being mainly t execute the laws of Congress." We as voters will select the man to fill that office. What values will we employ in making up our minds? It is measure too grave a choice to be determined by features of personality alone. What counts TTe the man's ideas about national and international issues and his .program for. safeguarding the free way . of life we know. Once we are truly aware of the vast responsibility the presidency,! in the next four years entails, we can scarcely go to the polls in a carnival spirit. We can't cast our ballot because we prefer one man's to another's. chin or smile or phrase-makin- g never forget that our future as a to November now let's From nation hinges on the ability of the President we select to captain us through a fateful time in history when the values we cherish most are under attack. His will be a job unenviable in the enormity of its pressures, but a proud one to fill if he takes it on with our nonpartisan support. jf Who'll Tell the Family? (Editor's note: This article from the Menifee Journal, French-burKentucky, which was distributed by Ground Safety, carried ' such a punch we wanted our readers to see excerpts of it, too.) How would you go about telling a mother and father their son had just been killed in a wreck? At this point it matters little who g, ''., caused it." . a The above nresents problem faced daily across our country. It is a commonplace one and not difficult to handle. It gets to be almost boring to ignore the silence at the other end of the 'phone a silence not nearly as dead as the one you have just experienced at the scene of the accident. This is the simple part. The tough part is to get across to the parents of children living today that the odds are pretty good someone in their family will be injured and maybe killed by an automobile. Have you been passing the word along? The driver, not the car, is responsible for the killing How about your own driving habits? Slipped through a stop sign lately. How about that yellow light' it means caution, remember? Getting pretty good at squeezing in that extra five miles over the posted limit? Just a thought, but every time you break a law you are not only proving yourself to be immature, irresponsible and impolite but you have first priority as a killer. The guilt . . . how do you reconcile yourself to the fact that you have .been responsible for a v death? You are being watched. Have you noticed? Not the police your children. They have been watching you all their lives. They will imitate, more than you or they realize, what you do. When you crow about spotting a cop up the road in time to slow down and avoid a ticket, you are being watched. Congratulations! You may have just signed the death warrant of your children if they live through your driving. We keep telling ourselves it's always the "other guy" who has an accident. Who do we think we are kidding? You and I are the other guy. You are the other guy for me and I am the other guy for you. .Safety starts at home. We should teach road safety to our children. We should have our children memorize and realize the fact that 40,(XX people are killed and more than a million injured by automobiles in this country etch and every year! What are you going to do about it? As things are going the odds ivill catch up with you soomr or later. But I guess you're not worried. According to previous rules, an airmen selected for reenlistment had to cancel his extension and immediately. This meant he had to pay back part of his bonus for the uncompleted part of his extension. Although relatively few airmen are affected, Hq USAF has moved to waive this provision to prevent any monetary loss or hardship to airmen selected for reenlistment. In a message to all major com mands, Headquarters has said in such instances an airmen will be able to sign for an additional nine months' extension under selective reenlistment procedures and allowed to complete his original commit ment. When his commitment if fulfilled, the airman will then be required to cancel his nine months' extension and reenlist for a four year term. 1.
