Smith of the 1906 Airways and Air Communications Service squadron at Hill re ceived the citation letter and silver identification bracelet awarded for this honor at ceremonies held in the general's office. As first sergeant and public in formation specialist in the AACS squadron, Sgt. Smith "performed his duties with the utmost skill and proficiency", according to Major Earl J. Kovara, commanding offi cer of the 1906 AACS squadron. In recommending Sgt. Smith for airman of the month honors, Major Kovara further stated "he has dis played the qualities of a leader, the ability to get things done, and the capacity for obtaining cooperation of all personnel in his organiza tion." Sgt. Smith, originally from Rec tor, Arkansas, enlisted in the Army in 1943. He served 27 months with the mechanized cavalry, 11 of which were spent overseas.
