In order to track the particles in their meanderings, the Air Force assigned its "eyes and ears of the rawinsonde units atmosphere" to follow of the weather section and record all possible data on them. One of approximately 24 rawin sonde stations in the nation, the unit at , Hill Air Force Base, was one of the key outfits whicn traced and plotted the courses of the were wandering particles as they . . carried by winds. ; at Hill the unit For the airmen it was a routine assignment for it was 'merely an addition to their daily duties of plotting the weather from ground level to thousands of feet above the earth. Four times each day "the airmen loose a large balloon which some scientists say are the fabled flying saucers loaded with instruments. A radio attached to the balloon transmits back to the station the vital statistics of the atmosphere it passes through. Followed by a radiosonde set the balloon instruments send back the relative humidity, pressure, wind velocity and temperature. These are then transmitted all over the United States and used for charting weather maps. The importance of the Air Force increases with rawinsonde set-u- p the wider use of jet planes. Wind velocity at high altitude where jets are capable of their best performance cannot be found by any easier method. Just last month balloons sent up at Hill went up to 154,009 feet on one try. On another check a balloon hit 139,000 feet. , The radiosonde' set at Hill is at a slight disadvantage in comparison with other Air Force units in . from HILL AIR BASE SDMI . . . . behind a maze of rawinsonde TSgt. The mountains cut the range of the frequency modulation transmitter which is used. FM waves will not "bend" over the mountains as ordinary radio waves do so at times the balloons are out of contact with their home base. For instance, the balloon which rose to 139,000 feet last month was lost when it was 101 miles' away. Minus the mountains contact would be held much longer, according to Technical Sergeant William J.
