The movie is onscreen at the Base Theater on Saturday, April 20, at 3 p.m. REVIEW Moon, and need six boys and six girls for the main course. One of the Grand Witches (Famke Janssen) is busy as party coordinator and caterer, but she has one more surprise that will require the presence of at least one of the famous siblings. The real surprise for me (and there are many) is that Renner, Arterton and Janssen could have read this script and said, "Heck, yeah, let's do this!" The witches look like rejects from a Halloween costume ball, and the plot feels like it was conceived on a cocktail napkin. But, hey, it is big, loud and dumb — which moviegoers seem drawn to these days. "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" should have been hunting for a better way to dress up a creepy old fairy tale that was odd enough in written form. On screen, it's a disastrous nightmare. What a great bedtime story, eh? Gretel (Gemma Arterton), on the other hand, has no dietary complications, just a firm, square jaw (she gets punched a lot) and a handy talent with a semiautomatic crossbow. Anyway, so they're traveling through Germany, vanquishing witches, getting their names in ye old newspaper, when they're hired by a mayor whose small village is being plagued by a series of child abductions.
