Show HILLTOP TIMES TIME S 11 July 12, 2012 Review: 'Wallace & Grommit' gurus take on the popular pirate genre BY STEVE SALLES n Standard-Examiner movie critic S orry, Captain Jack. Your stranglehold on the pirate genre has been loosened by the unlikely team of Lord & Newitt of Aardman Animation. Yes, the guys who brought us "Wallace & Gromit" and "Chicken Run" have set their sights and sails on the high seas for some hijinks with some highly disreputable characters. In "The Pirates! Band of Misfits," Pirate Captain (voiced by Hugh Grant) has the admiration of his loyal crew and his trusty parrot, Polly, but not of the other pirate notables who think he and his bunch are a joke. Each year, the pirate guild gathers on an island to determine who will win the coveted "Pirate of the Year" award. And each year Pirate Captain (who shall remain nameless) has been left wanting. Normally, the prize goes to the likes of Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) or Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek), because of their display of an enormous amount of pirate booty. Determined to silence his rivals, Pirate Captain drives his y4 crew to board every commercial ship they find. Unfortunately, they happen upon a plague ship, a nudist colony boat and a ghost ship — all with fine passengers but with zero treasures to plunder. With the wind now taken from his sails, Pirate Captain resigns himself to his fate as the perennial loser — until he comes across the H.M.S. Beagle, the famous science sloop led by the equally famous Charles Darwin (David Tennant) and his bright but wordless chimp, Mr. Bobo (who uses cue cards to hilarious effect). Darwin points out that the pirate ship's mascot, Polly, is perhaps the last living dodo bird and could be worth a king's ransom once presented before Great Britain's Royal Society. There's only one small catch: England's Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton) hates pirates with a passion. So Pirate Captain and his crew will have to disguise themselves as scientists to present Polly before Aardman Animations for Sony Pictures Animation The Pirate Captain (voiced by Hugh Grant) sets out on a mission to defeat his rivals Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz for the Pirate of the Year Award, in "The Pirates!
