BY ANGIE TVMOFICHUK Ogden Air Logistics Center Engineering Directorate A lmost three years ago my husband, Col. Randy Tymofichuk, wrote an article for this editorial column that focused on embracing change, surviving and adapting, and not letting opportunity pass by. The famous quote from that article — that I hear at least every few weeks from various friends still — is "time to grab the pancakes," meaning that when the plate of pancakes gets passed around the table, take some now because you never know if any will be left when it comes back around. When opportunity knocks, throw the door open wide! My husband Randy retired two weeks ago after 25 years of service to this great country. Throughout his career he has been known as the guy who grabs the pancakes, the one who gets things done, the change agent. Randy epitomizes everything good about seeing life's challenges as opportunities, adapting and doing so much more than merely surviving. He is my inspiration both personally and professionally and is indeed a role model to all leaders, whether they lead from the top, bottom or middle of the organizational hierarchy. I want to share some perspectives on Col. T. and what I've learned from watching him lead. He is a driven man and simply will not let things slip by. He understands his business, knows where he wants to go and sets the vision. He has left his mark on the Air Force mission. But being a technical expert does not by default Tymofichuk make you into someone people want to listen to, let alone follow. It's his contagious passion and true dedication to his people that make him the leader I admire. As his co-worker, I get to hear firsthand about his successes. But he will be the first to tell you the names of each and every one of the individuals involved and how they contributed to the mission's success. There are approximately 750 folks in the 309th Missile Maintenance Group, and he knows each one. He still knows the names and faces of each and every AMMO troop he ever had the privilege of serving. He knows because he cares. "You Matter" is definitely not just a slogan. He will remind you that people are our most important asset, and he reminds them daily by interacting, caring and simply being visible! As the commander's wife, I get to hear all of the ways (and there are many) in which he encourages others tp see and pursue opportunities at everyy turn. In fact, he'll be the one to grab f the plate of pancakes and put some on . your plate ... even if you don't want <.' them. But all storytellers admit that - •: they would have missed a tremendous-.\\ opportunity if it weren't for him. Trust.' and empowerment are some of his key tenets. A good friend once told me thatif Col. T. told him to jump off a bridge, he'd do it without flinching. Trust your:. people and they will trust you. Col. Tymofichuk is now faced with one of the most significant events of his life: changing his uniform. I purposely did not say "retirement" or "becoming a civilian." The biggest change of his life has become his next great opportunity to serve the country in a different "uniform," i.e., civilian clothes. It's not an easy transition for someone whose entire career has revolved around belonging to the active duty institution, but Randy has a long history of grabbing pancakes — a history that I am blessed to see and learn from. My challenge to you (and me) is to be the leader who leans forward and takes care of the mission and the people by ; passing out the pancakes at every op- ; portunity. - TEAM HILL IN ACTION 777-7000 action.line.pa@hill.af.mil When you call or send an e-mail, your comments will be recorded and staffed through^ the agency responsible for action.
