HELP From 1 as a resource to help organizations deal with drug and alcohol problems of employees. With some government funding, the EAP has evolved into the program it is today, helping people with any crisis they might encounter. "The EAP is a crisis resource for people when something is not going right in their lives," said EAP Consultant Robert Johnson. "It can be personal problems, relationship problems, or drug and alcohol problems. Basically, all of the problems that happen as a result of living." The EAP began at Hill Air Force Base in October 2002 and is available free of charge (up to six sessions) to all civilian and military personnel and their immediate family members. "We do assessments to put some context around the problem," said Johnson. "After we spend some time and get a little history with the person we decide what kind of help is needed to manage the problem. It may be that we spend three or four sessions with a person, or we may find a person has a more serious long-term mental health problem or is an untreated alcoholic or addict. When the presenting problem requires something other than short-term focused counseling, the EAP role is to assist the person in connecting with the needed resource — whether that is another resource on base or their benefit plan." The EAP works hand in hand with organization supervisors to help identify a troubled employee. Intensive training programs for supervisors help give them skills to recognize troubled employees and how to work with them. Although participating 1ST LT. "Allowing people to know that there is a safe place to get help and them knowing that it's confidential and free, helps tremendously in the workplace," Johnson said. "In terms of lost time, the potential for on-the-job accidents, violence in the workplace, inappropriate discipline or wrongful terminations, the EAP provides the opportunity for significant dollar cost savings." An appointment with EAP services typically lasts about one hour and is always with a certified and licensed therapist. The program also allows employees and their families to use off base therapists, contracted with in the local community. "They don't have to see us, they can see someone who is contracted in the community to provide the same service free of charge," said EAP counselor Mickey Williams. "If someone would prefer to go somewhere else because of convenience or any other reason, they are free to do so." The EAP also offers a 24-hour call center where callers — either employees, dependents or supervisors — can receive consultations immediately 7 days a week. "I certainly believe that inside of each person are the answers to their own problems," said Johnson. "But when they are in crisis, they frequently are not in touch with their own strengths or resources. The EAP can help the individual recognize and access their personal resources to address their current stressors."
