Sean Hilltop Times staff by 1 Carter Maj. Gary Grove, an Individual Mobilization Augmentee who works in the Logistics Support Management Directorate, gave the Air National Guard oath of enlistment to his daughter, Lydia, Sunday. Lydia is the third member of her family to take the oath in the past three years. She will join her two older brothers in the Utah ANG, Jason and Jonas, who are jet engine mechanics in the 151st Airlift Refueling Wing. Lydia will serve as an Aerospace Medical Apprentice in the Wing's clinic. Lydia chose the Air Guard for several reasons. Her father, who also began his career as an enlisted member of the Air Guard, and her brothers were a great influence. She says she was attracted to the education opportunities and job experience the Air Guard can offer. New state legislation allows her and other guardsmen to obtain more scholarship money than ever before and Lydia plans to take advantage of it. "School is my main goal. I hope to continue my studies at Weber State and the University Flu of Utah," she says. Lydia, a senior at Northridge High School, is a very active teen. She is captain of the school's swim team, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of Health Occupation Students of America and lifeguard at the Hess Fitness Center, all while maintaining a grade point average of over 3.80. When Lydia graduates she will also have 20 college credit hours completed through a program between her high school and Weber State University. "She is a very responsible young lady," boasts her mother, Valley Grove of the 0 Management Division. After her high school graduation, Lydia will attend Basic Military Training and her functional training before she returns to Utah and the Air Guard. "I've heard some things about it," she says, "I'm nervous, but I know that I can do it." No doubt her brothers have given her some advice. "We're proud of our little sister," Airmen 1st Class Jonas Grove said, "I just hope one day she doesn't out rank me!" Jason, Jonas and Lydia have a younger sister, Emily, 12. Right now she doesn't have plans on joining the military, but time will tell.
