COBDOg u Sometimes it doesn't take people much come with viable a up suggestion that works and saves the Air Force money, especially when it concerns the work they deal with daily. For four Hill AFB employees, their suggestions saved the Air Force more than $120,000 and earned them more than $5,000 for their efforts. The top suggestion award for October was garnered by Stephen M. Curry, a material expediter in the Directorate of Maintenance. Mr. Curry, of Roy, Utah, was awarded $3,004 for his suggestion to change some gauges on the arresting gear system of F-- 4 Phantom aircraft. There are two pressure gauges used in the system. They are listed as primary and alternate procurable parts. Mr. Curry proposed, since both gauges serve the same purpose, that the least expensive of the gauges be listed as the preferred gauge. The suggestion was approved and the Air Force saved $82,618 in procurement costs. Two other MA workers shared an idea that netted them a qash award of $1,656. Don W. Law, an aircraft sheet metal mechanic from Ogden, and Ted M. Lewis, aircraft sheet metal foreman from South Weber, suggested a change in procedure for the drilling of the intercostal bulkhead (shoe) on aircraft. The two suggested that the drilling be done usslow RPM drill motor rather ing a "Chicago-type- " than the drill motor which was being used. The holes drilled with suggested motor were just as accurate, but could be done much faster. As a result of the approved suggestion the Air Force saved $31,880 in reduced labor costs. TSgt. Jeffrey L. Vaughan, of the 1881st Communications Squadron, was awarded $1,365 for his sugreceiver used on the gestion to modify a single-ton- e RAMP NET frequency for the control tower. The sergeant proposed that the system be modified by putting in a channel guard receiver in parallel with the single-ton- e receiver already in use. Installation of his suggestion ended the need to modify all new radios to the system and saved the Air Force $21,850 in radio modification costs.
