The storm had been predicted to strike at Iowa Park, a community closer to Sheppard than the Sykes Mall was. Shortly after entering a store at the Mall, Strayhorn and Pyper heard, in addition to the precautionary warning sirens, a general announcement that the storm was half a mile distant and approaching.
