In keeping with AMC's emphasis on Air y teamwork in the nation's defense program, the General called upon business to "pull no punches" in telling AMC how to improve its packaging. One of the features of the conference was a display showing packaging innovations perfected by each of the 15 AMC Depots. The Topeka Air Force Depot was a,warded a trophy for having the best in the show. Force-industr- the conference- - Brig. L. Winn, Director of Transportation and Services at AMC, emphasized the importance of packaging in the Air Force logistics system. The General who is responsible for AMC's $700 packaging mission, said, 'We have a man-size- d job to answer General Rawlings' challenge to make the Air Materiel Command packaging system the best in the world." In the keynote address, Colonel Robert L. Mason, chief of Air Materiel Command's Packaging and Materials Handling Division, outlined 10. objectives designed to provide efficient and economical packaging for airlift of supplies in atomic warfare. The nation's industry would play an important role in the program. These goals, Colonel Mason added, are aimed to insure practical, common-sens- e Air Force packaging. He emphasized that this 'implies a readiness to accept new ideas, listen to suggestions, welcome criticism 'research for a better mousetrap.' It requires a willingness to defy tradition and a divorce from the theoretical approach." The Colonel pointed out that practical packaging from the military point of view cannot pay homage to self appearance, customer preference, or profit. Military combat effectiveness, he said, depends upon the availability of material in the right amount, at the time, at the right place in right use- PACKING COMPANY 9 mil-lion-a-y- ear SYRACUSE Dial WE SELL ONLY INSPECTED Opening Gen. AMC) You and I know that we must know our jobs in AMC if we want to stay around. We also know there are many ways to improve ourselves and more than a few ways to "disprove" ourselves. We need to know every opportunity for improvement and every danger of "disprovement," lest we miss the former and fall victim to the latter. One of the greatest dangers is that of sabotaging our own work or the work of others. We wouldn't do this intentionally, but we can very easily do it unintentionally. For instance, we can say to someone that if we are going to exchange war plans with our enemies then there can't be much use for us to observe security regulations. AFM 205-- 5 considers such statements as psychological sabotage, which the manual says is a "relatively new weapon . . . already proved to be as effective and destructive as physical sabotage." Also, we may viciously attack government policies designed to maintain our national economy and military force. AFM 205-- 5 labels this as political sabotage. And we may participate in what is called "working to rule." Here we do nothing incorrectly or with evident malice. We work with extreme caution, pay undue attention to detail, and merely secure minute instructions prior to every move. AFM 205-- 5 calls this labor sabotage. The professional labor, political, and psychological saboteur knows that if he is to do his job he must get many of us to unintentionally help him. This is his problem; and it presents our problem of how to keep from unintentionally helping the saboteur. Our problem really gets complicated when it appears quite often that we must give up such democratic processes as doubting the wisdom of government policies, vociferously criticizing political action, and rebelling against conditions under which we work. Unfortunately, our problem can neither be simplified nor completely solved; fortunately, neither can the professional saboteur's problem To this extent we start on an equal basis. Next problem is how to stay even or gain on him. Tje solution t0 this ProWen is simple and can be completely solved. AFM 205-- 5 gives us the answer when it says, "Becoming aware of communist dangers, of what communism is, how it got started where it wants to go, and how it plans to get there, is our job. We must study communism and democracy U. S. A. style." A thorough knowledge of racy provides a dependable basis upon which to evaluate government tuuecuve action ipr working cond tions: a meagre knowledge of communism and democracy results in starrv-eye- d guesses at best, and psychological sabotage at the other We can safely doubt, critic ze and rebel when we're sure our doubtSe criticism, and rebellion help democracy, AMC security, and indi' vidually.
