Show Th Hillfielder August i, New P-8- 0 Jet Plane DeligMs Test Pilots shows little taper to the fuselage. ... of the obstructions to smooth air flow are the pilot's blister A SIDE YifcW (Continued from page 1) sation of straining when it's opened up, in direct contrast to any other type of plane. As soon as the Shooting Star picks up a little speed, one really begins to appreciate the power. There is in higher excellent acceleration ' , speed brackets." Once it has oeen started, the jet engine requires no ignition system. A spark plug protruding into the combustion chamber ignites the mixture of air and fuel and it is introduced into the combustion chamber and this mixture then burns continuously.. The hot gases pass rearward through a - jas turbine which is whirled rapidly by the impact of the expanding gases. A shaft connects the turbine to the compressor fan in front of the engine, supplying the power necessary for intake and the compression of the air. After passing through the turbine, further expansion of the gas in the tail pipe system provides the forward thrust which propels the airplane. The real problem in develop ing jet engines lay in the turbine the tendency of the tur bine and compressor wheels lit erally to tear themselves apart from sheer centrifugal force limits their speed and is a princi ple factor in limiting the jet plane's speed. Alloys had to be developed for the turbine blades so that they could stand the terrific temperature and still rotate at very high velocities. High Speed Wings Needed The other factor is the shock waves encoun tered at very high speeds. planes of the future will require new, thinner, high speed wings to reduce this drag and vibration and will have to be absolutely clean The P-takes a big step in this direction. In fact, it is so sleek, with its flush riveted and highly polished painted skin, that dive brakes are installed for slowing the plane down in making a descent from high altitudes. The P-has a wing span of 39 feet and an over-a- ll length of 34 feet 6 inches. From the ground to the top of its rudder it measures 11 feet 4 inches. Its total 8000 empty weight itishasonly an armpounds, although or glass windshield and steel armor all over the front bulkhead and the back of the pilot's seat. The engine fuel is kerosene, preferable to gasoline because it provides more energy per gallon. This energy is transformed into "pounds of thrust," which is the term used in measuring jet power instead of the more familiar The enword, "horse-power- ." gine can be completely removed and replaced in the airplane in 20 minutes instead of the usual 8 to 9 hours! Complex Systems Eliminated In addition, the elimination of the propeller, ignition system, carburetor, and the complex propeller and engine controls of the conventional fighter plane, simplifies manufacture and maintenance of the P-a - P-- 80 The only and the air scoops just forward of the wine. THE FULLY . . . Retractable tricycle landing sear of the 'Shooting Star' can be seen in the above picture. The forward section of the fuselage opens like the hood of an automobile for access to armament and accessories. (Air Technical Service Command photos.) The "Shooting Star" will clip off 550 miles per hour at any altitude and has a service ceiling of 45,000 feet. The jet plane operates at optimum fuel consumption at high speed in contrast with Conventional fighters whose best fuel economy is secured at reduced -power and speed. Has Slow Landing Speed Contrary to the common imdoes not come pression, the P-in for a landing at blinding speeds, but rather glides in on its approach at the same speeds as ordinary fighters and makes contact with the runway around 100 miles per hour. To overcome limited control-abili- ty at speeds attained by the 0, the ailerons are hydraulic-all- y boosted to give the plane an extremely high "rate of roll." Immediate and positive aileron action is thereby attained and the quick turn or roll, is available to the pilot. Electric aileron and elevator trim tabs are also provided. Pilots are surprised to note the lack of any rudder trim tab. The absence of torque, or tendency of any kind to veer from its path, denies the need of this heretofore essential fixture. th recovers in from The P-to one-ha- lf turn in a spin. Since the engine is not located in the nose, the pilot's compartment is located well forward offering a notable improvement in visibility. The ship's battery of guns are also packed in the nose which reduces gunfire dispersion. Cabin Is Pressurized In addition to smooth and easy flight; the pilot gets another break in the 0. It has a pressurized cabin. In the slender this was fuselage of the 0, quite a problem. Some 14 valves, units and "muffs" had to be squeezed into an exceedingly small space. It's semi-a- ir condi tioned too-t- he pilot can make it hot or cold to his liking. The 0 is well armed, with six 50 calibre guns compactly mounted in the nose, so as to get maximum fire concentration at any distance. The guns are mounted at the bottom of the nose to preclude the possibility of the pilot being bothered by gun flash at night or on dark days. Mounting the guns lower than the ammunition boxes harnesses the force of gravity to aid ammunition feed to the guns. The gun-sig- ht is an electrical gyro lead computing type with a reflex optical system. The "Shooting Star" carries a gun camera and may have a photographic nose for use as a high speed photo reconnaissance plane. It has shackles in the wings which permit it to carry bombs or extra fuel tanks. Simple to Build "The "Shooting Star" is quite simple to build, accto Lockheed, and feaording tures a three section .construction nose, and tail unique in airplane design. .The entire aft section of the fuselage, including the tail, is removable so that maintenance men can make rapid inspections, repairs and engine changes.
