Each worker at this command is entitled to a vote. The nominations are representative, originating with the employes, and divided between each of the departments. The new directors of the association will serve their fellow employes, helping to meet mutual problems of recreation, entertainment and morale. It is important that all jjovernment employes of this command realize and understand that they are automatically members in good standing of the Welfare Association, and their membership continues as long as their employment here. The association is your association, and its activities on your behalf are the activities . Only by participation on the part of everyone, can the most good to the greatest number be obtained through the efforts of the Welfare Council. It is my sincere desire that suggestions from our. employes conducive .to improved field conditions be. made to the Welfare Council by each and every one of you. The proper procedure is to contact your duly elected representative, and bring the matter to his or her attention. The funds of the association are available to be disbursed for the purposes and in the manner that will do most to improve the general welfare of all. Selection of the new 18 directors is being made from a list of 67 nominees. The Maintenance division will select eight, supply division five,. headquarters and miscellaneous three members, personnel and base services two.' This is proportionate representation, in number, of personnel in each of the. keeping with the ' ' ' ' :. divisions. )';; I know that the new directors, like those we have had in the past, will give freely of their time and thought and energy to scarry out the purposes of the association. But it is equally essential that all of our em- ployes become "active members in the sense that they, too, not only take advantage of the recreational and other programs, but contribute toward making the plans of the association successful and representative of the desires and wishes of the thousands who are employed here. The association this next year will be as successful as you collectively make it by your individual of-all- , r . ' ; B-2- P-4- . : 72 Mr, Russell K. Many Hillcrest residents have complained of the Grade B and C pictures presented in the east wing recreation hall. Many also have evinced a willingness to Dav a 25- cent admission charge, instead of the present charge. The shoD is under the direction of Foreman Elmer Raat of Ogden, who has been working at OATSC since July, 1941. It is on a schedule and responsible for the entire water system from distribupumping the water to its tion, as well as the gas distribution system and the sewer system. also has charge of the maintenance of the steam and hot water heating systems as well as the hot water systems on the xieia. , Design Boiler One of the articles designed by workmen in the shop was a hot water heating boiler for the WAC barracks, designed by Cyrus Gold of Salt Lake City. It is capable of heating 500 gallons of water per hour and was built in the plumbof ing shop with the cooperationtwo the machine shop. These shops are also making new sleeve units to be placed in old faucets, obviating the necessity of throwing the entire faucet away. In cooperation with the welding shop, the plumbers have been forced to make various fittings of their own because of shortages. For the most part these have been turns in the pipe. Where the elbow with the proper angle of turn has been unavailable, the plumbers have cut the pipe and placed it at the desired angle, and the welders have welded the pieces together. Victory plumbing with victory units has been a source of much trouble on the field. This plumbing was necessitated by the scarcity of brass for pipes and fittings, resulting in inferior metals being used. Iron has been used in place of copper and brass for fittings, resulting in corrosion of the parts and complicating the problem of maintenance. Plastics Used Plastics are coming, into their own in the plumbing field, with many of the closet tank parts being made of this material. American industry has even promised plastic pipe for use in plumbing systems after the war. Raat says the plastic fittings used on the f!?ld so far have performed quite satisfactorily, although they will have to be considered on a trial basis for some time yet. Copper pipe, considered .to be the best, was used in the plumbing systems in the operations hangar and the base services both of which were builtbuilding, before the war started. Iron pipe was in buildings constructed on J"ed the field after the United States entered the war. 24-ho- .
