The graduates of West Point are the first source of our officered muter! nl, says J. B. W, Gardiner in Worlds Work. This Is a fact beyond argument The service which the graduates of the military academy have rendered to the country in ail wars has been so great, so distinguished, as to need little reiteration for publicity. This docs not mean, however, thut West Point and its curriculum. Its system of training and of education cannot be Improved upon. Indeed, it may well be claimed that in some respects the general scheme of West Point is somewhat of an anachronism. Too r much of the course is wasted, too great effort is expended in an attempt to muke the education genet al. Too little effort is made toward specialization. More efficient officers could be turned out if, after the first two years of general work, the cadet could select or be appointed to the branch of the service with which he is to work, ami be taught specifically along those lines. But what Is prob-nlii-y the greatest fuult with the West Point curriculum Is Its failure to tench what might be called the humanities, the proper relntlon'of man to man, the real democracy of service.
