"Even just ten years ago, when the Surgeon General's report showed definite links between smoking and lung cancer and other diseases, the bad statistics pertained mostly to men," Mr. Smart reported. "Women may have felt they were Somehow immune to the death and disability-cause;by smoking." Statistics now show that According Smart, d j smoking women are dying of lung and other smoking related diseases at twice the rate of women who don't smoke. "The truth is, women are smoking more like men, and dying like men. But men have done one thing more successfully than women; they've quit smoking at a higher rate. Two similar national surveys conducted in 1966 and 1970 by the U.S. Public Health Service, measured cigarette smoking of adult Americans," he said. "The survey showed, among males, the smoking rate fell sharply from 51.9 percent to 42.3 percent; among females, it fell from 33.7 percent to 30.5 percent," explained Mr. Smart. Teenage girls are picking up the habit at an earlier age. At first on the average, women started smoking at age 35. Today, teenage girls are beginning as early as twelve years old." Mr. Smart expressed why the Utah Lung Association is concerned with women smoking. "The earlier women start smoking, the greater the cumulative Baf stances such as bacteria, it 'cannot filter out the effects of smoking." He said, "Nicotine traced in mother's milk can have an adverse effect on nursing infants. Nicotine in the mother's blood stream impairs the heart rate, oxygen supply and blood pressure of the unborn child. Babies of mothers' who smoke may in fact, be born addicted to nicotine and suffer withdrawal symptoms during the first few months of life."
