Show Wednesday, June Kiwanis team wins first half Kiwanis wrapped up the first half title in the local WBBA loop last week as the loop completed the half with of one protested the game and the makeup of two postponed games. Kiwanis takes a winning streak of seven straight into second half play which got underway this past Monday. The first half champs have not lost since opening re-pla- y .... Babe Ruth nine wins pair, loses one Helper's Babe Ruth team in the county loop won a pair of games from the Kaiser team of East Carbon during the past week, and Joe Johnson pitched a three-hitte- r in the first game as the local team pounded the East Carbon pitching for 15 hits including a home run by Robert Beason. Kyle Lamph had a four for six night in the second and slugfest Johnson, Dave Maynarich, Failor, Beason and Richard Cunningham each had at least two hits. (HJ photo by Hank Itkln) Provo win puts legion team on top Helper took over the top spot in the District Four American Legion baseball standings last week with a win over Provo. The two teams were undefeated in the early stages of the district campaign. Scott Grundy fired a three-hittat the Provo nine, having only one real bad inning, the fourth when Provo got all three of their hits to score once. Provo had posted a run in the second inning on two Helper errors. Grundy was very effective, striking out 15 and 4-- 2 er walking only two. Helper grabbed a two run lead in the initial frame when Mark Martinez led off with a base on balls, Greg Mele blasted a double and a Provo error helped things along. Mutual had only one hit off Brietenstein, that a single by Jon Lee, but wildness on the part of the Kiwanis righthander kept the Mutual boys in the game until the final out. Tommy Hribar had a double and single for Kiwanis. Brietenstein with three" hits including a home run, Hribar with a single and and double Clayton Rasmussen and Scott Rigby: with three singles a piece, paced the heavy hitting for Kiwanis in the 1 win over Helper Merc. Dave Verdi drove in Helper Merc's only, run in the first inning, a single sending Steven Nielson across the plate. David Hansen started for the losers and was relieved by 11-- Nielson. The final week of activity in the initial half saw Kiwanis edge by Mutual and then Furniture, wallop Helper Merc, Mike Brientenstein for Kiwanis won a fine pitching duel from Mutual's Mark Olsen in the first game. Steven Bates pitched for Kiwanis in the overwhelming win over Helper 7-- came in the seventh on Tony Pappas' triple. Manager Elvin (Fudd) Juliano has a busy schedule on tap for his squad this coming week starting with a league game tonight (Wed) on the home field with Springville. Tomorrow night (Thurs) a couple of practice games are on slate in Helper with Altamont, the first starting at 5 p.m. Friday night it's back to Provo for another league game with the Provo nine and Sunday afternoon the team will travel to Murray for a twin bill with the Murray team in Ken Price Park. Sunday's doubleheader in Murray starts at 5 p.m. League Standings day. Mark Martinez at shortstop and John Borla behind the plate were in the starting lineup and played the largest portion of the game. Martinez handled six fielding chances flawlessly and started the opening inning rally for the South by getting a single. Borla had two singles in the game, both figuring in the scoring for the Region Six team. Greg Mele and Reggie Farlaino, the other two Carbon boys in the game were also in the starting lineup, Farlaino getting credit for the victory as the starting pitcher. Mele had a triple and Farlaino a double as the Carbon and Uintah High players were the standouts of the game. Bill Loos, talented Uintah High pitcher and outfielder, was named the game's outstanding player. Loos pitched the last three innings, striking out seven of nine batters he faced and had a perfect four for four at the plate.
