Show Wednesday, June 11, 1975 The Helper Journal '...I don't know much 5 8 about it' i 2 r7 Buchanan, team rising fast on racing circuit "I admit I don't know much about it," said Chuck Buchanan, driver of the thoroughly 1 worked-ove- 1964 Chevelle r that has been burning up the track this season at the Carbon County Fairgrounds. The members of the crew "don't let me mess with it," Buchanan said, and perhaps it's best, because between Buchanan's driving skills and the crew's mechanical expertise, the B and B Tacing Team, as it is called, has piled up quite a list of wins in the season. They set a track record of 21.057 seconds for the mile fairgrounds dirt oval on Memorial Day. In addition, the team has won one trophy dash, six heat races and three main events at the Carbon track; two e finishes in Provo at d events, and a fast time of the day, tnree heat race wins and a second and a finish in races at Grand Junction, Colo. The machine is a 1964 Chevelle body with a 283 cubic inch Chevrolet engine. The average driver wouldn't even want to think about taking it on a long trip: that high performance is paid for by the fact that it gets about four miles per gallon. It'll move up to 120 miles per hour, according to Buchanan. Stock car racing is an expensive sport, and Buchanan dwelled on the.1 importance of the sponsors who donate the money needed to build the cars in three-week-o- ld third-plac- NASCAR-sanctione- third-plac- e return for the name exposure they get. H&J Supply, BeJo Club, Harmond Electric, Chuck's Pharmacy, J&F Pioneer Welding, Matador Lounge and The Point After Lounge together kicked in the $4,000 it took to build the bright yellow Chevy, and Buchanan said another car, still in the shop, would cost a total of nearly $15,000. The cars are owned by the team, which consists of crew chief Guy Remick, John Barney, Joe Gross, Drew Krayjnyak, Buddy Hadden, Kyle Foster and Terry Howell, along with Buchanan. Together they can accomplish a rather amazing amount of work in a short time. In a recent period of preparation for a race in Provo, the crew changed the car's rear end to a heavier one, changed the exhaust system, checked the top of the engine, changed the tires and built new rims, filled body holes, painted and lettered the exterior, worked the suspension over and added a roll bar. No. 99 has been approved by NASCAR for short (Vi mile to mile) tracks, which means that its body, engine and safety features have been OK'd by the national racing organization. The crew is registered, and the car is eligible for racing practically anywhere, Buchanan Red-D-Mi- r ,- e - . PASSED, adopted and ordered published by the City Council of Helper, a Municipal Corporation, this 22nd of May 1975 CHARLES GHIRARDELLI Mayor ATTEST' ALBERT FOSSAT City Recorder The local WBBA first half race was scheduled for last night completion (Tuesday) with Kiwanis virtually assured of the first half title, but a couple of protested games and a rain out has cast some uncertainty on the final completion. and League officers directors were scheduled to meet early this week to make a decision on the protested games and set a date for the makeup game. Kiwanis has gone undefeated since losing the first game of the year, running the win streak to five with a 2 win over Mutual Furniture and win over Central Commission. The latter game is in dispute. Home runs over the past week were hit by Mutual's Billy Kirkwood, Central Richard Commission's Mortensen, David Johnson also of Central Commission, and Mike Kiwanis' Breitenstein. Morteisen had a five for five night in leading the Commission team to a long win over Helper Merc that took eight innings to decide. His home run in the first inning accounted for all of his team's runs in a loss to Kiwanis. Tommy Hribar was the Kiwanis pitcher in the tight game. 5-- Ellington makes 3.3c next 5,000 kwh 2.0c all additional kwh Add 70 kwh for each kw over 5 kw 10 percent Prompt pay discount Minimum: $2.00 plus $2.00 for each kw over 5 kw, but not less ends Kiwanis leads Coach Skip Leo and four members of his Region Six all-sta- rs 4-- 3 13-1- 2 4-- 3 Football clinic slated June 16 A free football clinic for tenth grade boys interested in playing on the Carbon high squad next fall will be conducted beginning June 16 by coach Tom Rabb. k The be held from two-wee- June 16-2- 3 to CERTIFICATE Mitchell clinic will 4:30 p.m. Rabb said, with being held on the opening day of the clinic. sign-up- s The only equipment needed for the clinic, Rabb said, is a pair of gym trunks. egion nine wins openers American 16-- 6, 9-- 7 14-- 3. 8 runs in the first inning of the opener and younger brother John duplicated the feat in the initial frame of the second game. The league opener with Orem was a long, ragged affair largely due to the inability of four Orem pitchers to find home plate. The quartet issued a total of 19 base on balls and hit one batsman during the course of the game. Helper atarted off with seven runs in the very first inning, getting only one hit, but five walks and the hit batsman were of little help to the Orem nine. Scott Grundy went the distance in the game for the local team and had one bad inning, the fourth, when Orem posted four runs. Actually the two league rivals had the same total of base hits in the game, seven apiece.
