Fish and Game Department officials calculated over 8,000 for Saturday and Sunday, a figure which includes two counts for those who came to the lake both days. Rangers said approximately 40,000 fish were caught during the weekend. A small early morning turnout that prompted head ranger Craig Funk to call it the slowest year in the past three burgeoned into a throng of over 8,000 Saturday and Sunday at Scofield Reservoir as warm, sunny weather prevailed for the opening day of the fishing season. A significant number of the skippers aboard the approximately 320 boats on the lake reported poor results, but on the bank, it was a different story. People were leaving at having long ago caught their limits. Fish and Game Department officials said angler-day- s for the weekend totalled 8,341, down approximately 20 percent from a year ago. Some 40,000 fish were pulled from the lake over the two days. Officials who had gill netted two days earlier to r determine growth in the lake's fish trout were averaging population said about IOV2 inches in length, IIV2 inches, 12 V2 inches, but a good catch of and rainbows was reported by fishermen along the mid-da- y, per-yea- ld three-year-ol- Y-- . f' bank. Out on the lake, the rangers' catch was smaller than small. An hour's cruise and an examination of every boat afloat uncovered not a single violation of either the life jacket requirement or the boat registration law. The good catch of trout Saturday, despite the relatively high population of "trash fish" in the reservoir, may have been a result of recent weather conditions, Regional Fish Manager John Livesay said. Chubs, the dominant trash fish usually move toward the shore to spawn when the water temperature is between 45 and 48 degrees Farenheit. By Thursday, when the gill netting was conducted, the temperature was still below this level. A treatment of the lake to eliminate trash fish-t- he treatment also kills the rest of the fish population-h- as been requested for Scofield, Livesay said, but this would require two successive years of drought to bring the water level down. A sobering note was added to opening day when a truck while boy was struck by a pick-ucrossing the highway on the east shore of the reservoir (See related story, this page), but generally, the news was good for the fishermen. "They're the best I've seen," Livesay commented on the health of the fish retrieved from the gill nets. He r deemed the growth of the fish "better than it's been for the past several years," but added that the age of the fish could only be estimated by sight. To make it official, samplings of the scales were taken from selected fish to be laboratory analysed. Another series of tests, these by the Brigham Young University Zoology Department, were also conducted to determine whether a parasite which dwells in the eyes of the fish making them blind and unable to feed had reached Scofield.
