Show 2 The Helper Journal Thursday, July Antique taken from residence 4, 1974 Outdoor bread oven stands idle in yard A bread oven built about 44 years ago is still in standing Catherine Verde's yard on Second East in Helper. Constructed sometime in the early 1930's by Miss Verde's brother Tony, now deceased, the oven was built to bake large loaves of bread. According to Miss Verde, the Verde family came from Sunnyside in 1916 to the home in which she now lives in Helper. The home was " built in 1907. Carbon Post No. 21 of Helper is the sponsor, and the program annually provides baseball activity for young men between the ages of 15 and 18. Throughout the years Helper has won three state championships and various second, third, fourth and on down places in the state tournament. The championships came in 1940, 1941 and 1943. Three years ago a reunion was held for the 1940 and 1941 title teams at the "Old Timers" game. Last year a reunion of the 1943 team was held in conjunction with the game.
