Show 2 Thursday. Jan. The Helper Journal WUMBS Key to creativity: commune type living? Many young people today proudly speak of the communal style of living as if they had personally invented it and all of its attendant unconventionalities. But an interesting little twist to the story that promises to surprise the young and give some semblance of ho e to the "over thirty" crowd, is the fact that communes have been part of the United States for over a century, and at least one of them has developed into a successful international business. Oneida Ltd. began as a typical commune in 1848, replete with women's rights, centers, abolition of marriage and a form of group therapy called "mutual criticism." The company has since evolved into the nation's largest maker of stainless steel tableware, realizing earnings in the millions as an international concern. If junior or daughter suddenly decide to trip off on their own version of the good life, it may not be the end. The urge to "do their own thing" may soon pass, leaving in its place an idea, creative drive or enterprise which will last for centuries. day-car- e Most choose action Near record numbers of college graduate applications for federal employment are being received, reports the Civil Service Commission. For every vacancy, 11 to 14 qualified college candidates seem to be willing to take the position. Says a Washington news release, ". . . Uncle Sam seems to have its pick of the college trained work force." Although it is unfortunate that so many young people reject challenging careers in private industry, it should be kept in mind that those seeking the federal security blanket remain in the minority. Private business is the real scene of action and accomplishment where the great battle to advance technology, environmental quality and produce the jobs, goods and services that will raise the quality of human life will be fought and won. The future of the nation will never be in doubt as long as most of our young people know this and act accordingly. This year the Elk and Moose count on the Manti Mountain will be conducted by helicopter instead of a fixed wing plane. The helicopter will give division personel a better trend count than in the past and should supply the game managers with a better formula in managing the big game herds. These counts are used as a trend count only and with other studies to make the recommendations for the hunts in coming years. The duck season has ended leaving the Cottontail Rabbit as the prime target for the hunters' guns. Rabbits in most of the areas I have worked this year, seem to be on the minus side. But with the advent of new snow and some good bright sunny days, the Cottontails will be soaking up the sun light and could become good prey for the hunter. Two Division of Wildlife fisheries Resources enlightened biologists Wildlife Board members on work being conducted at Lake Powell at the Board's December meeting. Steve Gloss, project leader at the soutner utan lake, and biologist Bruce May updated past studies and told of future plans for the popular fishery.' the Gloss explained importance of the threadfin shad as forage for the lake's game fish. The shad was introduced into Lake Powell to establish an in adequate forage base for striped bass. It soon became the most important source of food for all game and became species, abundant throughout the reservoir. The black crappie and bass are largemouth 1968-6- 9 lira IN ' p.m. presently the most important game species in the lake. Pressure on the species is heavy, with an average of between 120,000 and 130,000 angler days per year for the past two years, said Gloss. The striped bass have not yet been introduced into Lake Powell. May explained that water in Utah's hatcheries has been too cold to rear the stripers. A rearing pond for the bass has been built near Glen Canyon City where, it is hoped, the fish can be raised next spring. Water tem- - shows one of the units bearing the track emblem.
