"There is no formal Editor WALTER BORLA DAN ing Publisher ROBERT FINNEY MEMBER OF THE Association - Founded t Helper Journal ' Letters to. Dear Mr. Borla: My attention has been called to the fact that a statement made in my letter to the editor which was published in last week's Helper Journal was incorrect. The statement I have reference to is the statement I quoted Delee Montoya as making to the Helper City Council. I stated he had discussed the qualifications of the applicants for the Police vacancy Sheriff, this was as the discussion members of the Chief of with the incorrect was with Sheriff's staff and officers of the Price City Police Department. I also quoted Mr. Montoya as stating that none of the men interviewed would recommend Mr. Sillitoe. Mr. Montoya indicated to me that his statement was to the effect that no one would express support for or against the applicant. misinterpreted his statement and wish to I retract my statement and express my apologies to Mr. Montoya for my error. Yours very truly, Chris P. Jouflas Dear Editor: ; In the July 12 issue Regarding the police chief appointment, Mayor Jouflas concluded his letter to the editor thus: "I will appreciate your publishing this letter in your next edition in order that the citizens of Helper may have all of the facts in thie case." Strangely enough, the mayor's letter did not fulfill his own expectations. Since the mayor desires all the facts to be known, I am happy to accommodate him with the following information so that he will not be disappointed. I refer to article 5 where the mayor complains that the Journal reporter failed to report a statement made by Delee Montoya and that your paper told only part of the story. Mayor Jouflas clearly writes that Mr. Montoya related in the council meeting of his discussion with the Sheriff of Carbon County, members of his staff, members of the Highway Patrol, and Chief of Police and that in all of his investigation he failed to find one officer who would recommend Mr. Sillitoe. I personally called Sheriff Passic, who authorized me to publically state that he had never been contacted by Delee Montoya on this subject and that he did not give a recommendation for either Mr. Sillitoe or Mr. Stavar due to departmental policy. This was not a reflection on the competency of either man, for he stated that both were good men, but he would not take sides in the issue. I then called a member of the and Highway patrol received the same answer. The mayor criticizes the Journal for neglect of coverage, and yet he uses of his second column telling of contacts that were never and made making statements that are only half true and deliberately Misleading to the public. Is this his idea of fair, balanced coverage? If his Mr. motives for Sillitoe were honest and justified, why did he find it necessary to resort to half truths and statements that he is now being forced to retract. Does a mere retraction wipe the slate clean? Hollie Sillitoe's career has been ruined after he has spent 11 years of his life working toward a goal. Mr. Montoya 's name has been well-deserv- in- voice views sullied. Is this the end of the half truths or are we in for some more? Sincerely, Smiley Amano Dear Editor: I attended the Helper council meeting of July 12 and was surprised at the record of Mayor Jouflas.
