MEMMOTT, EDITOR ANNUAL DAYS OF '49 TO GO ON AS PER ANNOUNCEMENTS Tonight will see the Old West brought back to life as the Annual Days of '49 open for a three night program As in all other of fun. amusement and years past, the 1949 committee have worked long and hard in trying to make the '49 edition equal to those of the past. It is to those few men and women that I devote this bit ol space to this week, .Headed by D. J. (Jim) Nelson,, as chairman, only a small handful of interested people turned out to the first few meetings. But despite this seemingly lack of Interest, they rolled up their sleeves and went to work, and as a result the "Show Goes On Tonight As Per Schedule". The only nfortunate thing of all this is: Jim Nelson can't he here to help put the finishing touches on the affair his job took him to Provo for a couple of meeks. However, his assistant, Albert Cook, has assumed the chairman's role and with the help of last year's chairman. Frank Dalpiaz. and the others of the committee, are carrying on. I am hopeful the activities will be productive of funds with which to begin a much needed youth center, which is the project accepted by the committee to concentrate on in 1949. You and I can make their efforts a success, if we will patronize the 1949 Annual Days of '49. "what-have-you- cCc LET'S TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER AS IF IT'LL DO A BIT OF GOOD Everyone is taking about the weather these days, and not a soul seemB to have done a thing about it. And, I'm not going to offer a rolution or even suggest when It might atop snowing. All I do know is that I'm doggone tired of It, and I'm certain that's the way most all the rest of you people feel about the stuff. Monday's additional nine inches of snow in the Helper area brought to an approximate total of 63 inches for the winter to date. These figures supplied by an employee of the Rio Gr,ande railroad. Was interested to note a report of the snow measurements on the Scofield water shed as determined by a couple of Carbon men, which ranged all the way from 26 inches to 41 inches. This report somewhat differs from the stories brought hack by residents of Clear Creek and Scofield and those who have driven to and from these communities, who bring back reports of 5 to 7 feet of snow piled up there-aboutWhat has proven to be tragedy for parts of the western states, has been a stimulator for the industry which keeps Carbon county alive. Not only are the mines able to work to capacity, but the failure of gas as a fuel and of oil burning equipment, has done somethe high-cos- t for Coal, in that much talk and some action has been thing in evidence toward converting to coal as a fuel for heat. Noticed an item in a paper a few days ago where the Brigham Young University at Provo had announced they had converted their equipment to coal for the upper part of their campus. This same item mentioned that the University of Wyoming at Laramie were also seriously considering converting from gas. That's true of life injury to one sometimes aids another. We don't like to see and hear of tragedies that hare constantly dotted this state during the most terrific winter in nearly the state's history. However, we are happy to see the coal mining industry given a shot in the arm. WHAT'S THE REASON WE CAN'T HAVE LICENSE PLATES SOLD IN HELPER? That's the question I can't answer: "Why can't wo have state automobile license plates sold in Helper this year, as has been the case In years past? A couple of weeks ago I called the Price office of the State Tax Commission and asked that question. I was told that the state had not allowed sufficient help to establish a Helper office, and no assurance could be offered that a change in heart might be forthcoming from this source. This is not the first time the state has taken this attitude about a service that would help a lot of motorists, who especially during the bad weather we have had, find it difficult to make a trip to Price to buy their plates and have their car assessed. An editorial two years ago in the Helper Journal brought some action, and the opening of an office. I'm going to send the State Tax commissioners a marked copy of this comment, and urge them to send an xtra helper to the Price office that we might have this service a service the north end of Carbon county will greatly appreciate. , krly detection of cancer Is the ical examinations are the of cure. Price and Helper, have challengpd each other to an attendance contest that will run for two months during February and March with the club losing slated to fete the winner to a dinner and program sometime after the contest ends on March 31. According to Robert Carnavali and Chris Jouflas respective chair men from Price and Helper, they have met and formulated rules to govern the contest which will be figured on a percentage basis. First of all each club was expected to supply the other with an official, list of active " members, and at any time either of the two committees are allowed to check the others attendance records. The secretary's roll will be the official roll and must be "kept accurately according to the rules. A mem-bp- r missing his own club meeting will e given seven days in which to make up his attendance, and it must be another club, and not at a director's meeting. International rules gives a member the comp'ete calendar month to make up attendance missed, or he may attend a club director's meeting during the month. But these rule3 have been outlawed for the inter-club contest. On Wednesday, ( Continued on March 2, the Page Eight) Old Man Weather has done his best to snowfall which blanketed despite the forth to open the Hub city's popular affair ihose who participate a chance to "let their cause postponement of Helper's Annual Days of '49, but the no; th end of the county Monday, plans are still going that re ives each year the spirit of the old west and gives hair do vn" and have a good time. A hope chest filled with many and sundry articles of use will he awarded at this same time. From 9 o'clock and during all this Saturday evening activity' a '49er dance will be in progress with Jimmy Dart and his orchestra supplying the music. One other thing the committee emphasises is that many other floor prizes besides those mentioned will be given away each night. All that Is necessary is that the person whose name is called be present to receive the gift. There is no charge for admission to any of the activities, but the committee refrains from making any "Let one's conscience promises about what it'll cost to get out be his guide", is the only advice offered by those In charge. vice-chairma- up-stai- y Stake Conference Set Sunday In North Carbon North Carbon stake, Church of Saints, Jesus Christ of Latter-dawill be host next Sunday to its membership at the first quarterly conference of 1949 at the Price tabernacle, Cecil Broadbent, stake president, announced Monday.
