This project is also sponsored by the Klwania club. t it seems rather a waste of time and space to go into the great work of Scouting in the world. I'm not going to do that, but I would like to pave the way for a group of local businessmen who'll don the mantel of Scouters for a few hours and contact the business district of Helper for a generous donation. Keep in mind this one thought and you can't turn down a Scouter: "Each dollar you give might save a boy from becoming a delinquent". A hearing has been called, with the rail company ask-inpermission to suspend service on the theory that business does not warrant the operation. Mail patrons in Carbon County have found the train an extra service. A mail bus starts from Price every after, noon, and connects with the train at Thistle after having stopped at Helper and Castle Gate, making connections with the west bound train in the morning and the east bound train in the evening. With this service, mail from Price and Helper arrives in Salt Lake the same day it leaves and in case of delivery, makes the first one from Salt Lake City each morning. Mail from other trains between these points is not deliver, ed in the capital city until noon. That's certainly a good argument for us out here in the coal fields to be in opposition to suspension of the service that is being fought by the cities and town of Sanpete and Sevier counties. The Carbon County Chamber of Commerce has taken up the fight in opposition to the request by the rail company. The annual Firemen's Ball sponsored annually by the Price city fire departscient, will be held on the evening of February 19, in the Price municipal gym. g Utah's new governor, J. Bracken Lee asd his wife Margaret, left Salt Lake Tuesday for Omaha, Neb., on his first trip since becoming governor of Utah on Jan. 3. He goes to Omaha as one of the principal speakers at the meeting of the Republican committee. No doubt "Governor Brack" will be a central figure at the G.O.P. parley since he is one of the very few Republicans who was elected governor of one of the nation's 48 states in the November election. It was my privilege to hear "Governor Brack" speak a couple of weeks ago at the annual convention of the Utah State Press Assn., and I'm mighty happy to say that "Brack" is one of the most improved speakers I have heard. His campaigning last year certainly matured him as an after-dinne- r speaker. Another virtue he possesses is that he speaks straight from the "shoulder", which eliminates any question as to where you stand with him. e jeane Halversen Named ;'V Snow Carnival Queen great honor was bestowed on Pretty Jeane Halversen, sophomore Young student at the Brlgham university, and daughter of Mr and Mrs Allen Halversen of Helper, A At the first meeting of the CarBoard of Education held at the board offices in Price, Jan. 15, 1949, they informed Supt. Mont Harmon that his contract as di? trict superintendent of schools would be renewed in June for an additional period. Although his appointment does not officially come up until June it has been the custom of the board to advise the superintendent of its intentions toward i reappointment or dismissal, whichever the case might be. Mr. Harmon came to Carbon in January 1948, one year ago, from the Box Elder school district, where he had served as assistant superintendent and in other cap. acities. He replaced the late G. J. Reeves, whose death created a vacancy. Other reappointments announced were those of George Ockey as board clerk and J. E. Pettit as treasurer. Mr. Ockey has served m this capacity since 1925 and Mr. Pettit has served since 1933. All appointments are made for a period of two years. The board of education includes C. W. Petersen, president; W. D. Wilson, vice president, and members Wes Shurtz, Elias Peacock and L. E. Durrant. was Superintendent Harmon also authorized to attend the national convention of school administrators to be held In San Francisco from February 20 to 23. The decision to attend was left up to Mr. Harmon. bon GOVERNOR J.
