DRUG tion. ADVICE ON MAKING Tourist Trends Reported "Spotlighting Utah" this week was from Chic aso where the Utah Pnhlii it y ami Industrial Development was ('nmiuissinn represented hy 'a tid H. Mann at the uinual convention of the Xationai Association of Travel Officials. Present were 94 vacation uavel experts, including !! nation's top newspaper travel p:s.v editors, various state publicity tiireetors, and air, rail and bus line '.representatives. 1'tuh. wi.h her of major tourist attractions :!,! s:ui;iteil on the tourist cross roads of Uio nation, is naturally concerned with tourist trends, for the t'tUeittialitieR of the tourist trade industry promises more .o Utah citizens in do'lars and cents than the from ;i! the state's other industries combined. Forty states were represented at the convention, and the Wednesday noon luncheon was fuiT.ishod by Michigan, whose soup, "salted celery," cheese, honey, fish, baked spuds, beans, icecream and stole the show. This writ er, however, still claims that Utah's "saltless" celery is superior to Mi chigan's "hopped up" product. Wednesday's speakers were L. H. Ris-;ochairman, National Bus Traffic association; W. L. Rdmundson, president, United Motor Courts; S. G. Tipton, president, Air Transportation association; Don Thomas, president, National Association of Travel Officials, and manager of the Southern Russel California All Year Club; American AutoSinger, manager, mobile association; Leonard Hicks, vice president, American Hotel association, and E. IS. Padrick, representing the nation's railroads. Utah stole a march on the group when W. L. Edmundson, at the conclusion of his talk, distributed to all present, current issues of the "Motor Court Age,'' published in Salt Lake City, and whose cover, depicting "Joe's Valley" a Utah scene, and titled "Invitation T0 Travel" was furnished by the Utah Publicity and Industrial Development Commission The key address of the convention was made by President Don Thomas, whose theme was that "Tourist Dol lars Are Job Creating Dollars." His declaration that factories furnish only 25 percent of normal private em ployment and that the other 75 per cent of the jobs are supplied by trans portation. distribution and service in dustries, such as the grocery store drug store, and gas station, is highly significant to Utahns. proving again the importance of the State promot ing more tourist trade into Utah's scenic area. "Seventy percent of Southern Cal ifornia's pre-wa- r employment includ ed those gainfully employed in work directly connected and dependable on tourist business," said Mr Thom as, "and the IT. S. as a whole is moving in that direction, as shown by progressive U. S. Census Bureau Reports." Highly significant, was Mr Thomas' declaration that, "tourist visitors from other states have increased the Cal ifornia citizen's power to buy auto mobiles, cereals, beef, watches and other products of other regions of the country by 16 percent. Thus," he pointed out, "the money spent by tourists in Southern California not only improves business there, but accelerates trade in every region of the United States." It is this writer's humble opinion that in due time, after the promotion of tourist trade into Utah is devel oped to a marked degree, that the same may be said about. Utah. All in all, the convention brought out the fact that: Bus travel of the future will be done in wider buses on wider roads; that buses will com municate with dispatching offices by two-waradio; that fares will be renovalower and that a nation-widtion of bus depots and restaurants is planned. It was further brought out that there are licensed sportsmen in the U. S. whose expenditures for recreational activities are a great stimulus to business; that planes will carry more passengers fares will be cheaper and speed increased; that next year, there will be manufactured auto million cars; that 33- tires for 4 million tires are worn out and need replacement which means 1946 car k tires per owners will only get car so take care of the tires. It was shown that in 19(50 there cars on tne na will be tion's roads and that next year, 84.5 percent of the nation's tourists will travel by car, and 64 percent In their old cars. Forty-threpercent of the tourist travel will be to the west s declared coast next year, it which indicates tourist money in abundance for Utah. It was shown that the railroads are now handling more military traffic than during the war and that the movement big military homecoming by railroads will be over by late June, 1946. The heaviest movement on rail lines will be during March, 1916 ahun-'danc- I Prices for Wed, Fri. and Sat., hum immiiiirnT mil nan ,iu m u iirrrTT innni C lJSk mM& II JJ I u 1 1 l ife ... ill t ' fer m miimip TOMATO CANS 3 l0DIZED .. 29c MEAT LUNCH 23c 35c 1 12 OZ.
