Carbon during their freshman -.- VE'RE FORCED TO ELIMINATE 'FREE JOURNALS' Since the first contingent of Carbon County young men answered the initial Selective Service call about eighteen months ago the Helper Journal has been sent free of charge to all those men from Helper and vicinity who have requested this service. "Free journals" to our boys in the service was an original idea by the publishers of the Journal, and the Journal was one of the very first newspapers to offer such a courtesy throughout the entire United States. Recently, or since Pearl Harbor, we announced that to mall the papers direct through our office bad become an almost Impossibility but we still offered "Free Journals" if parents or friends would call at the office each week for copies for their sons, brothers, etc. The Journal management has enjoyed very much offering this service to those who have availed themselves of this courtesy and from the many fine letters received from Service Men and other gestures, we know they have enjoyed receiving the Journal. However, with constantly rising prices of materials and labor used by the newspaper industry, we, the Helper Journal publishers are forced to discontinue this free service effective immediately. Virtually every other paper in the country who have offered this free service have1 long ago been forced to act as the Journal management Is now acting. Again we say, "The journal regrets this decision very much." We are able to compensate, in a measure, this action by offering a reduced rate of $1.75 peryear to men in the service after October 25. Until October 25, 1942. men in the Armed Forces may get the Journal for $1.50. There's exactly one month the Special $1.50 offer is available, Incidentally this week's issue of the Journal contains an announcement that effective October 25, 1942 the annual subscription rate to the Helper Journal will be raised to $2.50. . All eubscribers can save by renewing during the next 30 days. Mr and Mrs W. J. Bartlett of Helper announce the marriage of their (laughter Arlene, to Bennett Mangone son of Mr and Mrs Frank Mangone of Helper, the ceremqny taking place Wednesday, September 16 in Salt Lake City.
