TD EVERY HOMC THE LAYMAN'S WAR DELEMMA (EDITOR'S NOTE: The facts of this article are cited from Kenneth Andrews, chief of staff of A. E. F., aa appeared In The Salt Lake Tribune, Nov. 11, 1934.) Much Is said concerning the hov-o- c that might be wrought by another war. Some- - writers depict the snufflng-ou- t of whole cities with gas and destruction of armies thru the use of electric rays; they claim that another war will bring an end to the entire bodily existence of humanity. Such reflections can be called and delerious, and in most cases come from no authoritative source. Some Realities No bomb has yet been made that could knock down one of our modern, steel-framskyscrapers. When the Pee Dee river bridge in North Carolina was condemned, Bomebody thought It would be a great Idea for army bombing on it. planes to take a work-ou- t Well, they smacked the bridge with a few small bombs first and knocked off a few splinters. Next they hurled some Then down came some They made a few but If the enemy troops . dents had been streaming across the bridge, they would still have been after those hits. Finally, several d bombs were dropped one of the spans fell away. Over seventy-fiv- e projectiles were dropped and approximately elapsed before the bridge was destroyed. How many planes would visionaries have to Imagine to demolish a big city in a few hours? There are not enough bombers In the whole world to do It. The Gas Tales And how about poison gases? Gas has truthfully been called the most humane form of warfare when compared with other ingenious ways of killing. It takes a tremendous concentration of gas fumes to be really dangerous. It would require millions of pounds of gas bombs to annihilate a city of any size. No attack could be launched unexpectedly. Not until the country was defeated and helpless, could a single one of our cities be endangered. It would take vast hordes oi airplanes to do it and remember no plane yet has been developed that could be capable to cross the ocean with a heavy load. If gases are released In the air, the planes would have to fly close to the ground an easy target for anti-ai- r craft guns. Every gas con cocted is blown away within a few far-fetch- ed 300-pou- hours. It cannot penetrate small openings in fatal cjuantlties. If It were possible for an enemy to get in position to gas one of our cities, all the residents would need to do would be to shut the doors and windows and stay inside untill the breeze blew the fumes away.
