Various of its state went in for government owner ship on an unprecedented scale beside transportation and service industries, the state operated hotels, stores, amusement places and almost every standard business. The total result was gigantic deficits, followed by constantly growing taxes which the people of Australia could not carry. Government bonds dropped to a fraction of par. That is an old story. Now Australia has a new and very different story to tell. It is starting on its way to recovery and its economic methods, far from being radical, are most conservative. The great experiments in government ownership are coming to an end the debacle was complete and the people have learned an expensive lesson. A federal deficit amounting to about 10,000,000 pounds, for the fiscal year 1930- - 31 was replaced by a surplus of 1,314,000 pounds in 1931- - 32. The rate of taxation was consequently reduced for the fiscal year 1932-33- , which closed with a surplus of more than 3,500,000 pounds. Where the balance of trade was adverse, it became favorable. And Australian bonds have been steadily rising in the world markets. There is a lesson in this for other governments. Economic theorizing is attractive, but it doesn't pay. When government operates economically and efficiently, it is an influence for prosperity. When it is wasteful bureaucratic, the influence is toward depression. High taxes burdens on industries and these are always the enemies individuals political red-tap- e of progress. Ro-Iap- p, o, z, ra skyscraper stood in the Up to a short time ago a famous Loop district of Chicago. The building returned a rent of $50,000 a year. A Chicago business man was offered the opportunity to buy it for $5.00. And he turned it down! Since then the building has been wrecked, and the lot it stood on is being used for a parking space. This amazing little story appeared recently in the editorial columns of the San Francisco As the knowing will have guessed, the trouble with the building was taxes. They came to $40,000 a year. And the owners were in arrears an entire year. To continue to operate they would have had to pay out $80,000. The rent return didn't justify it. And the result? Well, everyone lost: The owners of the building, who had invested money in it and were finally 'forced to destory it in the city, which was out thousands in taxes; and, lastly, the general public, which must make up the taxes the building would normally pay. This is the old story of excessive taxation, and it has been told a thousand times. Bankruptcy, unemployment, industrial recession, slowed community progress these are the inevitable corollaries of wasteful and expensive government.
