Price Tri-col- SHOULD RAILROAD RATES BE REDUCED It has been intimated by a famous paragrapher that the railroads might go on a quicker paying basis if they entered into competition with the bus and freight truck lines. These lines now are capitalizing on the taxes paid by the railroads, which money is used to improve the highways that the trucks may more quickly put the railroads out of business. Picture the tax condition of the country in which you live in event the government is forced to take over the railroads. The government pays no taxes. Week-entrips and vacation days return trips proved very popular during the past summer, attracting heavy travel. The railroad companies are existing on the present light travel which pays normal rates, w here they might make more money if they were hauling three or four passengers, where they now are hauling one at a reduced rate. The railroads have not lowered their passenger rates and are forcing people to travel by air or by motor if they would be economic. Receivership has been forced and threatened in the railroad world, and a generqus government has come strongly to their relief. They easily could balance their rates to attract a heavier travel which also would mean the reem ployment of men in the train and shop service because of the increased business. The railroad problem is one which must be worked out, and there are many interesting angles. On the one hand, the railroads are forced into an unfair competition with busses, and are forced to pay heavy taxes. On the other hand, there is no manner in which the travelling public can be forced to pay high rates of fare. Civilization and development have penetrated the west because of the railroads, and public sympathy now should go out to them in their predicament. CARTh The Rev. II. J. If one figures an average of ten cords of wood as necessary to furnish fuel for the winter to one family, it means that 25,000 families in Utah this winter will purchase no coal. This is a matter which should concern every coal mine operator and resident of Carbon county. St. Barnabas Episcopal Helper Latter Day Saints Church J's-'-f- - THROWN PASSENGER TRAINS ARE JUGGLED Last week the D&.RGW railroad withdrew two trains from this portion of the line, and at the same time announced two more trains would be placed in operation between Denver and Grand Junction. It is a little hard to understand why business has fallen off in this portion of the state to a point where two trains must be withdrawn from the passenger run, while business in Colorado picks up to a point where two more trains must be placed in service between Denver and Grand Junction. It is, however, a rather well established fact that once Colorado gets a thing it hangs onto it, and if it can't have its full quota of trains running under one number, it takes them under another. After all, what is a number or two between train schedules? items 10-1- The election is over, and Herbert Hoover our President in just a few months will retire from the strtiles, worries and cares of political life into the serenity of private citizenship. It is only too obvious now that President Hoover was forced to play a lone hand in the campaign, forced to carry the fight into the camp of the opposition, forced to assume a defensive stand practically unaided. That he made a splendid stand in the face of a game which aparently had been well thought out for almost a year in advance by his opponents is to his credit. That he lost, too, may be to his greater credit, but this time alone can tell. It is not to be assumed that the record vote of Tuesday was either or It was a ballot of revolution against a condition for which no one person is re sponsible and which no one person can overcome. The issue has been placed squarely before the democra' tic party for remedy, and it is just. On the head of the son shall be visited the sins of the father, and upon President-elec- t Franklin D. Roosevelt shall rest the responsibility of correcting a condition which had its basic beginning under President Wilson when factories and businesses expanded and produced to the very limit, money was free and wages were high. The reaction is with us, has been with us several years, and the democratic party has been called upon to remedy it It is a gigantic task and by their deeds during the next four years shall they be known. The nation will watch with an intense interest. anti-Hoov- I Mi PIT Editor and Publisher Society Editor No charge for Phone 21.
